Three people were injured and a fourth victim killed during an attack on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Jennifer Herber, a spokeswoman for the Austin Police Department, said a suspect is in custody. The university canceled classes and scheduled events for the rest of the day.

University of Texas Police Chief David Carter on Monday afternoon identified the suspect in custody as Kendrex J. White, who he said also appears to be a student at the university.

“It was described to us that the individual calmly walked around the plaza … and basically attacked these four unfortunate students,” Carter said.

“There are no words to describe my sense of loss,” Greg Fenves, the UT president, wrote in a message to the community. “Campus safety is our highest priority and we will investigate this tragic incident to the greatest extent possible.”

Damn. America just can't go a month without some kind of mass attack at a school

Only the first incident of this and one bomb threat have been confirmed. The banner is not confirmed and I'm not seeing a source for the message or additional stabbings.

no reason to tag I think, its over it seems - but my thoughts:

I think there was a lot of (reasonable) hysteria by like 50,000 students because following the 4 person stabbing targeting greek life, there was a bomb threat, and another stabbing in West Campus, an area filled with student apartments and greek housing. Three events like this back to back to back is scary af since we didn't know they were unrelated at the time. Plus the whole may day bullshit

This created some speculation, leading to false rumors, leading to police searching apartment hallways looking for supposed armed attackers going door to door ... which didn't help the situation obviously =/

Also the campus and austin police department took way too long to say anything on the matter. They coulda handled the situation way better

Not as far as I know. The stabber said he didn't remember doing it.

There was a report of another stabbing in west campus, but it turned out today that the guy who said he was stabbed by an attacker actually was just playing with his knife and accidentally stabbed himself, and then decided to conveniently use the attack as an excuse. I think he wanted to avoid paying medical bills, but now he might be charged.
