For example, Samuel L Jackson or Morgan Freeman or Michael Caine pumping out half a dozen awful movies every year.

If they were short on cash I'd understand, but clearly they just can't be. Seems like a lot of unnecessary work in old age to potentially harm your reputation. Is it just boredom?

Maybe the reason they're not short on cash is because they keep churning out crap??

Steady work, a check and not giving a fuck

Sam Jackson will star in a direct to video movie and a hit blockbuster movie or 2 in the same year

"I have never seen the film, but by all accounts it was terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific." - Michael Caine on Jaws: The Revenge

"I was a medium-level juvenile delinquent from Newark who always dreamed about doing a movie. Someone said, 'Hey, here's $7 million, come in and do this genie movie.' What am I going to say, no? So I did it." - Shaq on Kazaam

"You get paid the same for a bad film as you do for a good one." - Michael Caine

I know Robert De Niro for example is straddled with debt for taking on a shitload of restaurant properties, which is why he's in schlock.

Michael Caine has said that he likes money. IIRC a conversation between him and his agent once went like this:

Agent: "There's a movie you'd be great for"
Michael: "What's it about?"
Agent: "About 5 million pounds"
Michael: "k"

tl;dr more money. A lot of actors star in schlock that pays well so they can do the indie grindhouse artistic movie every now and then, others just like money.

so they can make alimony payments (look up all these actors getting married to women half their age at like 60 yrs old and then getting divorced in 3 years) or cover up stupid fucking spending/investments they did

also actors like samuel L jackson and morgan freeman have tricked many people into thinking they are top notch actors who only appear in good films, but the reality is that they will act in literally anything that gives them a paycheck. they just manage to cast their nets so wide that they're bound to land a Pulp Fiction or a Shawshank Redemption at some point. sam jackson especially just plays the same fucking character in every movie

It's funny another person mentioned Michael Caine as well, IIRC he only started acting because joining drama club in school meant he could bang all the hot girls.

people think hes a good actor because he is old, british, and stars in those batman movies, which trick you into thinking that you're not watching a movie about a man dressing up as a bat, shouting platittudes while punching other people in similar costumes

I mean to be fair his wife gently hit her head on a bunny slope and died from it.

That's fucking tragic.

I briefly worked in NY Sports club in NYC(my friend's father is one of the owners). I can tell you what he did to take his mind off of his wife dying, and it wasn't acting.

Because those are the movies that need a big name to sell them, so they go out of their way to get big stars. Also they don't have to necessarily play a big part, they just have to be visible, so it doesn't require as much actual work on the actor's part. They can phone it in and get a good paycheck without damaging their rep too much.

There's a decent chance many of them just act in the movie and aren't privy to the ins and outs of production, or even particularly interested in how the movie will turn out once put together other than that they looked like they pulled their weight.

NY Sports Club in Manhattan is basically a big hotel, well of men often come in with "friends" of the opposite gender and much younger in groups.
