It was okay

The story did ramp up in the second half. I liked when Emil blew up the Aerie. And of course the ending sequence was fun. Good final battle between two halves of the same character. I kind of wish I had stopped there, but in my last topic B8 totally hyped up the second playthrough, saying that's when the game became "incredible". Boy oh boy, what an overstatement that was.

I guess I was expecting new game+ to be totally different, with new revelations and so on. Kind of like a Zero Escape thing where the second playthrough is the rest of the story. But nope, it's just the second half with a tiny bit of extra flavor added.

So we start with some completely inconsequential Kaine backstory. Then the rest of the game is exactly the same with a few scenes with the shades and the ability to understand their dialogue. These did nothing for me. If you were going to have a guilt trip about killing shades, you'd have had it in the Shadowlord's castle back when you learned the truth. Outside of like, three or four instances, the shades were the aggressors every time.

The scenes trying to make you sympathize with the wolves were especially bad. Sorry, but you guys swarmed me by the dozens in the first half of the game.

On to the third ending. It's ridiculous that you have to play through yet again rather than just reload a save. Nothing is different at all until the very end, where you fight berserk Kaine and choose whether to kill her, or erase your entire existence to save her. These ending are so weird and make no sense. Especially ending D. God damn.

So the entire game the father has had a singular focus on Yonah, but decides to throw it all away for Kaine. Kaine!? The girl who did absolutely nothing the entire second half of the game?! Kaine?! Maybe this could have been justified if there had actually been some scenes with some actual character development.

The other issue is Grimoire Weiss. I was expecting some explanation of what he is and why he matters, but it never came. Just a single throwaway line in a document saying that Weiss and Noire are there to facilitate the Gestalt project in some way. I don't know why they needed a magic talking book that can create a giant hand out of dark energy to to that, though.

I didn't hate playing the game. I'm just disappointed that the story, which everybody seems to absolutely love, fell mostly flat.

6/10
At least it has cool music

DP can make his own topics, you don't have to speak for him.
