The comparison is cause you have to live with either for the entirety of the rest of your life. Some will have better results than others in both situations but most will always have their life revolve around it. As someone with both I dictate very very little in my own life. Hard to tell which one dictates more.

Honestly, As an alcoholic, I know my Drinking is an addiction, not a disease. I have to fix it not some medicine. So I really hate when addicts say it a disease since they're just using it as a crutch rather than accepting that they're the one that is messing up. It hard but the only really thing we can ask for is help.

You do realise a good portion of people with opiate addictions got addicted to them via legal prescriptions from a doctor, right?

I got addicted to them. I was being prescribed 150 oxy per month (some months she'd give me 200) from my doctor after I broke my back. I was eating them like candy to help with the pain.

Did I do something stupid? No, I was in an accident where I was not at fault. I was suffering severe pain and the doctor prescribed an opiate, it caused an addiction.

For drugs like coke, meth, etc you are right but not always right about opiates. I've know vets who got turned to h because the pain pills they were prescribed wasn't strong enough anymore because of years of abuse at the hands of a doctor.

Why yes, the initial choice and action of taking a drug is not a disease.

But you like it. Or maybe you need it for some condition. And then eventually, your body adapts to it. Now it's part of your life, whether you like it or not, your body needs it to function, otherwise the withdrawal symptoms kick in. Your mind lingers on it, and part of your life revolves around on how to get more of it.

That seems to be the disease part of addiction. Not the act of taking it, but how the body eventually relies on it. And it is lifelong, even if you are clean for years and years, if you take it again, you are likely to end up right back to square one.

Oh yeah, there is likely also a genetic predisposition towards addiction. Kind of like how there is genetic predisposition towards heart disease. It lies there, hidden, until the right circumstances causes it to activate.

Or maybe I'm just full of shit. After all, taking a single class on substance use disorders (...Though a disorder is not necessarily a disease...) is not expertise, but hey, I get to look at a bunch of sciency stuff and regurgitate the info on a topic like this.
