I thought a sense was something you sensed

can you not sense when you are off-balance?

can you not sense when it's cold out side?

can you not sense when someone is closed to you when you cannot see,smell, feel, or hear them?

spatial awareness, temperature, balance etc

aren't these all things humans can sense that aren't described by the five you listed?

If you sense there is a killer in your house, no one would argue that using the word sense in this instance would be incorrect. Because we think of sense as in A SENSE and to sense as to seperate things entirely.

In this case, I suppose he sensed it using intuition. But no one here would say intuition is a sense even though you can sense things with inuition.

So what exactly makes things a sense?
I'm guessing a sense has to be removed from the mind and reason, a tool of the body that doesn't require rationalization.

So in that sense, balance IS a sense, but inuition is not.


Or... how exactly are you guys using sense? Any explanation that would group those 5 together and exclude all others doesn't seem to make much sense. What are the qualities of the group 'sense'?

I tried to find something, anything... any qualifier for why balance should not be included and I could not find anything.

Many people suspect there is no explanation and we only think there are 5 because of the rigid simplified nature of education and the sheep qualities of human beings.

I found that Aristotle just wrote a book about those 5 being the senses and it just became a meme we repeat to this day.

step 2: hold out your right hand
step 3: touch your penis
step 4: there is no step 4, you experienced the 6th sense that is your own personal body map, you are aware of where all parts of yurself are at all times. did you smell your dick? did you see your dick? did you hear your dick? did you smell it? how were you able to touch your right hand to your dick?

some definitions of the word sense define a sense as being on of those five.

but these types of words are completely valueless. what use does a word have just grouping 5 things without establishing a likeness between them? a quality they all share to be grouped together.

And the second you try to make a quality to group these five together, the group begins to fall apart because any likeness among these 5 things applies to many other thins that are being excluded.
