The world of sports is still pretty homophobic. Visibility like this helps people see that gay people can be successful athletes too. It helps those scared, gay kids who are tired of having to live a life of constant lies just so their teammates don't suspect anything. So no, I don't think coming out is pointless. Gay marriage gained so much acceptance because people started to realize that gay people were their neighbors, brothers, sisters, moms, dads, teachers, athletes, actors, etc. Do I think coming out will become redundant at some point?
