It has nothing to do with that. Even if you're playing a custom scenario that does something wildly different, all the units still function the same way and it's important to know what they do.

They got their own servers so you won't have to worry about them much at all and Koreans don't usually play custom maps.

DOTA killed WC3. True story. Completely killed the growth of the UMS in the game, and the World Editor went to waste.

Oh god this. Sifting through eleventybillion DOTA lobbies to find anything that wasn't DOTA. The community that sprung up around that game was unmitigated cancer.

Parasite was my shit. That was a damn fun game. One player started out as an alien-infected human had to find a way to infect or kill everyone else. Turning the humans against eachother by inciting paranoia and distrust between players.

My go-to was to leave a bomb early on at the AutoDoc. If anyone started forcing people to get checked for infection I'd detonate it on someone else going in. Now they think whoever wanted them to use the autodoc just tried to kill them and the humans become divided, taking the heat off me as they start fighting.

I must be the only person who actually just loves the RTS part of it. >_>

I'm not even remotely good at it, I just love how crazy the games get with the sheer number of fronts you end up fighting on at the same time because no one in the world can manage them all at once and your units naturally end up all over because you can't move them all at once. The strategy isn't in making the perfect "counter" units, it's deciding where to focus your attention so your units actually can fight well and use spells, but while you're doing that you aren't building more units and rallying them, and while you're doing that you're not expanding, and while you're doing that you're not sending those fifty units in the middle of the map from the last fight to do anything...

I wish people didn't have this bizarre attitude of "I'm not a 400 APM Korean so it's not even worth playing the game".

Very little of SC is intuitive, especially compared to modern rts. I would bet most people without rts experience would not be able to do the protoss campaign in Brood War without cheats.

Look dude if you've played League of Legends or any other DotA clone then this game will be easy to get into. Kinda like if you've played any FPS then a game like Left 4 Dead will be easy to get into. But yeah if it's too hard then there's always a tutorial.

I got sick of DotA pretty quick. I loved Hero Line Wars and Hero Arenas. Cube TD is a classic too.

This. If you learn fast you can probably manage the Terran and Zerg campaigns, but the Protoss campaign has levels that will fucking punish you, especially Protoss vs Protoss missions

Between Arbiters throwing Stasis around everywhere, Reavers plowing your static defenses, and High Templar constantly trying sneak up on grouped units to let a few Psionic Storms fly and tear down your troop buildup, those missions still fill me with ungodly rage

There are just so many little micro tricks and exploits that it boggles my mind whenever I see the people that have been playing this for years pull off. Like people knowing exactly what buildings fills which gaps. People that know how to micro their units to fall in line. People that know exactly how to manipulate the pathing so that the enemy mismicros. Etc.

That's why I only play custom maps bro.

They completely redid the graphics engine, now it's OpenGL based. It has windowed and windowed full screen modes that not only have bilinear filtering and clearer text, but the switching between them is seamless.

The first PvP mission is literally "select Dark Templar and move them to the bottom right of the map, then right click the orange Nexus". You can beat it in like five clicks in under two minutes.

The second one is pretty annoying if you don't play on an old patch (the newer AI will mass scouts if you mass carriers while the old would just die) but it's very easy to take over the whole map and defend everything with just mass carriers, leaving you with only one difficult push through the main Protoss base with a massive army.

The final mission is the one that's really insane; enemy Defilers and Guardians make your life hell if you turtle for any length of time. You want to rush nukes and nuke the objective twice from the south; there's a path with only two spore colonies in the way that you can clear with Raynor's Yamato or some nukes, and Zerg moves all their overlords away once you kill these for some reason.

Connection problem. It's strange because Diablo 2 works just fine with the correct router and firewall settings, but Brood War won't load any of the Battle.net gateways. Also strange is that it was also playable on the same system a couple years ago....

Honestly, the lack of real intricate UMS War maps on youtube is depression. It's all Death in Europe (DIE), which is trash compared to actual gems like Civil War Virginia, WW2 Stalingrad, Normandy Invasion, etc.that showed off an amazing ass use of triggers and historic replicacy.

Or just dicking around in RP Ticonderoga, IIRC one of the better RP maps available.

How populated is online nowadays? I haven't played in years

Yeah the overabundance of Dota is why I just stopped playing. I was never any good at the main game so custom games were what occupied me.
