So the new family last name that you're starting is Smith-Lee.
What if when your children grown up and become men and women who meet the one, they get married, and their partner also has a hyphenated last name, say Tucker-Pritchett. So in order to compromise they decide to combine both hyphenated names to make Tucker-Pritchett-Smith-Lee? Where the hell does it end? The combine last names for a hyphenated last name thing was a novel idea to get rid of "outdated" gender roles of the woman taking the man's last name and bring about equality, but at some point... I dunno. I'm not saying there is another solution for the whole equality last names thing, only that the hyphenated name business runs out. And yes others make up a whole new name to combine the two, but that might not always work and a lot of families like to have consistency because of the whole genes passing on legacy thing. --- ... hispanics got it down bruh. my wife still uses her maiden name because why the fuck would you want to change your last name (plus mines super common and hers isn't). kids will have both and they can figure that shit out when they have kids. --- "This is why you always use gender neutral pronouns like xir/xim/zxir" - REMercsChamp ...
