It was an alternative to what came before (specifically,80's "hair" rock).

I have friends that do stand-up/improv and they all refer to it as "alt-comedy". I have no idea what constitutes it being "alt" considering... that's what comedy is.

Because it wasn't top 40. There are separate "alternative" charts.

But yeah obviously there's some overlap, the top of the alternative charts will usually be pretty high on the regular top 40. Like with Twenty One Pilots today.
