Quality food and ignorance is expensive. Just for some meat, fruit and veggies, I can easily spend $30 on a visit but that'd last a few days potentially. $100 a week isn't unheard of.

What?! A box of past salad costs like $2. Sure that doesn't include the cost of the mayonaise, but still.

Most people in college don't know how to budget and go out to eat all the time. My friends called me cheap because I never ate out when I could eat food at home but were also always tight on money. It's pretty stupid.

80 buck is really low though, you can't be getting a very nutritious diet going on that.

no, it does not make 100% perfect sense, unless he was drinking only water and having instant ramen for every meal

that's $2.67/day on average. there are very few things you can buy to even get two meals a day for that cheap

rice and beans, sure, but even adding vegetables into the mix is gonna bring the average up. eating fast food at all (a single dollar menu cheeseburger with tax is gonna take almost half your daily budget and that's with nothing else)

I'd say I spend $300-400 a month for a family of four. And I stockpile canned goods and have two freezers and a small deep freeze full of meats. When I come across good sales I stock up. I rarely eat out, once or twice a month, I cook dinner at home 99% of the time, and my youngest son brings a lunch from home to school everyday.

Eating out is the biggest money waster. Even when I can afford it I haven't been making it a practice doing so. Last month sometime when on the road we stopped at Burger King and with each of us getting a combo meal it was 30 fucking dollars!

PB&J - $2 per jar, plus a loaf a bread = $5. Enough for 6+ meals, depending on how thick you want your sandwiches
Ground beef - $2-$3 a pound(x8). A pack of 24 burrito shells - $4. Shredded cheese - $2 per 1/2 pound(x3). You are looking at about $26-$34 for 24 beef and cheese burritos.
Chicken legs/thighs - $.89/pound. Pairing with vegies or not, easily under $2 a meal.
Canned Vegies - $.79 a can. A meal in itself
Ramen - 6pack for $1. Ball up some of the ground beef into meatballs for a little extra protein.
Soda - $1 per 2lt. As long as you are drinking no more than 2 glasses a day, that's 10$ a month.

And then there is couponing. A lot of grocery stores send you stuff in the mail monthly like "spend $50+ in one purchase, get $10 off)

if you're eating crap processed food like maruchan raman and those microwave lunches/dinners for $1, then yes, you can survive for that much.

But getting good quality food costs quite a bit. Especially meat.

If you are living off of $80 a month, of course you aren't going to be getting a "full course meal" multiple times a day. But yes, as a meal to tide yourself over until the next one, these are fine. Especially if you make them big enough (as listed, they are all well above typical "service sizes");
PB&J - 6oz of PB&J on bread is quite filling
Beef&Cheese burrito - 1/3lb beef burrito. Not the 1/8lb taco bell minis you are thinking of.
can of vegies - Yes. 1 whole pound of green beans/corn/whatever
Chicken leg - More like 2 thighs, or 1 thigh and 8oz of vegies
Ramen - note I added the meatballs in there.

Also, if you want to go super cheap, go hot dogs
8pack hot dogs = $1 (gwatney aren't great, but they are cheap). Chili - $1. Shredded cheese - $2. Bread - $1... $6 for 16 chilli cheesedogs, That's $1.5 per meal if you eat 4

Then we have different definitions of "starving", because there are enough calories in those meals that you shouldn't be (unless you are regularly exercising).

That's probably because you are more accustomed to larger meals. It's not like you'd only be eating bread and tuna each day. I mean, for nearly 3 years, my food budget was roughly $100 a month, and the stuff I mentioned was a big part of what I ate on a regular basis (2 meals a day + some snacking), and I was far from "starving".

I could eat the 4 dogs a meal and not be hungry. Granted Im skinny but I can totally see how 4 dogs a meal would get you by. Of course asuming you wouldnt mind eating the same thing everyday.

Lot's of people think that not being hungry=being full and that is how some people get fat (Im not saying anyone in this topic is fat).

You can either eat to satisfy your needs and not be hungry (you could eat more but only because you like the food not because your stomach/body tells you to) or you can eat until you are 100% full that you cannot eat one more thing without puking.

Doing the latter of course forces your somatch to get bigger and then you get hungry more often and repeat. While doing the former is imo, what should be done most of the days.
