*presses Y* *nothing happens*
*presses B* *jumps*

*presses A* *attacks*

*resets the game to see if you can change the controls*
*you can't*

There's a reason the A button on the SNES controller is usually reserved for special attacks that are rarely used. You have to bend your thumb in an awkward angle to reach it. Here, it's the most commonly pressed button in the whole game. The Ninja Gaiden games are notoriously sadistic, but that shouldn't extend to causing you physical discomfort in real life. It'd be easier to play this game using a keyboard.

What a major fuck up.

I made it to the final boss in Ninja Gaiden 1. (I've beaten it on NES.) It's still uncomfortable to play with those awkward controls. Also, the music is shit compared to the NES.

Otherwise, it's Ninja Gaiden.

For the record, the controls didn't interfere with the actual gameplay except for one time in the last level when I instinctively pressed the Y button to attack. It's just uncomfortable because I'm repeatedly applying pressure to my thumb at an awkward angle.

Most gamers hold SNES controllers from the middle. One thumb is in the middle of the right circle and one is in the middle of the left circle. Whoever programmed the controls on this game seemed to think that you hold it with your hands directly at the side.

Well, I beat the first game. I don't remember the xenomorph -- I mean demon -- being that ridiculously hard. I guess it's fitting that the final contest in a difficult game would be a challenge in its own right.

I still contend that making A the attack button was a stupid fucking idea though.

That's basically Kingdom Hearts' original controls, which is preferable anyway.

They did.

I'm glad that Ninja Gaiden got a compilation on the SNES. I basically bought the trilogy version as insurance in case I never got a copy of Ninja Gaiden 3 on NES. Now that my NES isn't working, it's the only access I have to any of the three games. (I'll get a replacement NES or a new set of pin connectors at some point though.)

For what it's worth, it's still fun. But the music is awful in comparison to the NES.

Are you holding the controller wrong? I can't figure out why A is difficult to press. You don't have to use the tip of your thumb.

I typically hold it from the middle because Y and B are the primary buttons on the SNES controller and the controller rests more comfortably that way. For Ninja Gaiden, I maintained my initial stance during the first playthrough -- and awkwardly extended my thumb to the far right to tap the A button repeatedly. On the second play through, I acquiesced to holding the controller from the side. It's not comfortable though. It feels like I'm holding a brick from the side (except that it's virtually weightless).

Given the choice, I'd much rather change the controls than my preferred method of holding the controller. It's just more comfortable to rest the area where my thumb meets my palm on the bottom of the circle.

I always hold it so the middle of my thumb can slide back and forth between A and B. The tip can hit X and Y if need be.

What the hell... Do you always hold the controller in a way that your thumb is facing straight upwards? That seems like that would be uncomfortable. Your thumb should pretty much always be at the angle you're using for the A button. You don't have to completely reorient your hand for the usage of the A button. If it's at the same angle you're using for the A button, you can keep that same angle for the B button. Simple, easy switching between the two. Not to mention, if you're so keen on having Y & B being your primary buttons, like if you're playing SMW, then your thumb should still be at the angle you're using for the A button, so the tip of your thumb can be on Y, and the base of it on B. I mean, the layout for the SNES's button layout is designed for your thumb to always, comfortably be at an angle like you're using for the A button.

yea sounds like a git gud issue

This goes beyond "git gud", this is more like, "Learn how to hold the controller." No wonder why the N64 controller phases you younger generations, Jesus.

One thing I don't get about the game: Malth.

In the opening cut scene, Ryu's father is defeated in a sword duel. Toward the end of the game, it's revealed that his opponent was a guy named Malth.

In the opening cut scene though, Malth is an Afro-Caribbean man with the same build as Ryu and his father. And he fights with a sword. In the later boss fight, he's a muscular giant, his complexion is much lighter, and he fights by calling down lightning.

Something tells me they came up with that twist late in development.
