tbf, our policies do inflate the cost of dairy and us dairy could easily be made to fit our standards for sale, but doing so would push domestic products out of the market and fuck over our industries

All this tough talk is just political theatre for his domestic audience. The US has a 400 million dollar trade surplus with Canada when it comes to dairy products. The problem is oversupply - US dairy farmers produce too much milk and then cry foul when they can't find anyone to buy it. FYI dairy products aren't included in the NAFTA agreement, they've always been party to separate negotiations due to the complicated nature of supply management economics on both sides of the border.

Besides that, U.S. producers invented diafiltered milk to get around tariffs. It's a kind of milk boosted in protein and it can be used to make cheese. There is no tariffs on dairy ingredients but milk import in Canada is very restricted. Canadians regulations demands that a percentage of cheese be made of milk. The trick was that they declare the product as an ingredient when they export it to Canada, then they would sell it to processors who would declare it as milk to meet the cheese regulations.
Last year, Canadian farmers and processors came to an agreement to provide them at a better price and end the importation of diafiltered milk. Now U.S. producers are pissed off. Some invested to grow their production thinking the loophole could be exploited forever
