It may work, but it also may not and that makes it in vain and knowing you let someone die in vain is possibly one of the worst feelings. Nothing we learn at any point implies that Ellie's brain doesn't contain the key to fighting the infection and as someone else pointed out it butchers the ending if you pretend it does. Going against someone's will to murder a bunch of people and prevent the forming of a cure for humanity in a zombie apocolaypse for selfish reasons because you like them and are pissed at the world, is evil. Joel is evil. He'll doom the world and fuck everyone else for his own wants, even people who showed him mercy. He never was a hero.
