They'll either write them off or completely ignore what was said in order to continue the narrative. This engenders a lack of faith in the discussion, which causes the other side to then sink to the same tactics, ultimately destroying healthy political dialogue. Trump became even more popular with his nicknames and just completely shitting on everyone around him with never actually acknowledging anything of substance.
