I mean, those are probably the biggest gaming icons out there, and they are all in or have been in Smash. I suppose Banjo & Kazooie is an option, but they aren't as big as they once were and Microsoft has done jack shit with them since the very polarizing Nuts & Bolts; plus, they're wholly owned by Microsoft as a first party IP, so despite Spencer's comments I'm not sure just how feasible that is.

If they want to top the hype of outside-Nintendo characters, I feel the only way to do so is the look beyond video games. Meaning the likes of Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, and Goku.

Heihachi was considered, but Sakurai had trouble translating his moveset into Smash.

However, there is a Heihachi Mii outfit.

Also, I agree that Snake needs to come back. After Sonic, Mega Man, Pac-man, Ryu and Cloud, Snake would've been the one thing that would've made Smash 4 perfect for me.

Not necessarily. Such a game would only appeal to the competitive minority. If anything, they'd be more likely to throw it onto the eShop as a Virtual Console download.

Nintendo would be better off porting--and possibly adding to--Smash 4, the game with more content (as in, more characters, the thing most consumers care about) and features.

Old post from the Smash Wii U board I posted in late 2015

The 8 player smash could be a battle between the most popular gaming companies we all had growing up in the 90s to early 00s. You've already got Nintendo who should just buy out Rare so we can get Banjo/Kazooie and Conker. The other reps already in (Sega, Capcom, Square, and Namco) should get at least 1 more character.

Sega: Knuckles, Shadow, or actual Virtua Fighter characters
Capcom: X or Zero
Square: Tifa (FF7/another female char) or Sora
Namco: Lloyd Irving and Heihachi

The remaining 3 companies and their characters IMO should be:

Konami: Bring Snake back, add Raiden (he's in PSA so maybe not), and Quiet, since we need more fan service. I'm also all for Simon Belmont
Tecmo: Ryu Hayabusa and Kasumi since they're instantly recognizable.
SNK: Kyo, Iori, Terry, and Mai Shiranui for fan service. A Metal Slug character would also be perfect for Smash.

You've already got Nintendo who should just buy out Rare so we can get Banjo/Kazooie and Conker.

Two problems with this:

1. Much of Rare's talent from back then left a long time ago, many of whom formed Playtonic. Buying Rare would only get you a hollow shell of their former selves.

2. Microsoft owns Rare's IPs, so buying Rare would not get Banjo, Conker, Killer Instinct, etc. back in Nintendo's fold. So, you'd have a dev whose best days are far behind them, wiithout the games that people loved from them.

Honestly, the only way to outdo that lineup would be to bring in Master Chief. No other character would carry the same significance or "HOLY SHIT" reaction that he does.

Banjo-Kazooie would be close, but the franchise is more or less dead, and at best is made obsolete by the existence of Yooka Laylee.

Bomberman is another good choice that would mean a lot to people, especially given the series resurrection with SBR. Snake coming back would be nice, but it's a similar situation as Banjo (to a lesser degree) in that it looks like the character isn't coming back, or at very least isn't as big a deal as he used to be.

A remade Melee with online play would absolutely be popular. Saying it would only appeal to competitive players isn't true. Melee was a massive success among both casual and competitive players. Yeah, true, that was 15 years ago, but Melee does offer other modes that the sequels didn't. Unique Break the Targets stages, Adventure mode, a good event mode, etc.

I agree though that porting or re-releasing Smash 4 with more content would also be a smart move for the Switch.
