Like for as long as I've heard about it, it's been hyper-isolationist with extraordinarily toxic relations with the rest of the world and awful leaders who utilize a lot of propaganda to keep its citizens functionally brainwashed.

I'm not terribly familiar with the country's history, though, so has it been roughly the same since Korea split into North and South, or was there a specific leader who pushed the country in that direction at some point since then?

Actually, North Korea upon the initial separation did better than South Korea for a few years. They had a better leader and South Korea had a dictator.

It's just that SK had foreign countries they can develop off of, having one of the highest developmental rate in history, and NK ran stagnant for decades. I remember during the early 90's, a movement to reunite Korea still ran strong. But SK left NK so far deep in the dust that nobody in SK wants to reunite anymore, and NK probably realizes it's too late for all that shit

So it sounds like it was gradual and largely a combination of post-WWII factors then?

I actually glanced through the Wiki article for North Korea a bit ago, but I didn't really see much in terms of how this specific ideology developed, unless I missed it. So I thought someone else might have a better picture and could explain it. Sorry.

Well first of all they had a leader placed as a dictator that used Soviet Union brainwashing and population control methods.

Then they tried to invade South Korea around 1950. They were in decent shape at this point. After the Korean War ended their country was basically decimated. They isolated themselves off from the rest of the world and as communism and the Soviet Union crumbled they had very little support. So they are a poor shithole now full of dilapidated buildings and are barely surviving on donations from other countries.

After the Korean War ended

Technically, the War never ended. It's just currently at a ceasefire.
