I always kinda hated the idea of an FF7 remake tbh but honestly I kinda like some of the stuff they're doing with it. The episodic thing could actually be a good thing if it means they're going to flesh out the depth of the world with more sidequests and whatnot.
I dunno how to feel about the real-time combat though. Seems like they'd have to lose a lot of depth that way. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

Questionmarktarius posted...FF7 was already very "episodic". Sure it is. The first part of the game is the gang locked in Midgar, doing very linear things, with the rare occasion of being able to walk backwards to a prior area. There's several "episodes" in Midgar, then the "run from a snake!" episode, then the "bigass-gun-town" episode, etc. Sure, it's nowhere near as "episodic" as Dragonquest 7, but it's still essentially a A-B-C-D progression clustered around "Town Problem #37", with not a whole hell of a lot of side paths until disc 3. What happens if I decide I want to go to Costa Del Sol again for some reason, but I'm playing the "underwater reactor episode"? That's a good thought, actually. If they were to make, as they claim, each episode "like a full game" then they'd have to completely reorganize the narrative. Afterall, you visit most places at least twice, and if the overworld, environments, characters and gameplay are all identical between episodes, that doesn't really feel like multiple full games. They'd have to focus on different environments at a minimum, which means You'd have to do both Midgar portions at once, both Junon portions at once, etc. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

What happens if I decide I want to go to Costa Del Sol again for some reason, but I'm playing the "underwater reactor episode"? I find this kind of hilarious because the original FF7 closed off/reopened areas all the time and had to be spread across multiple disks just to make room for the increasing number of locations and FMVs. But while that can be forgiven due to technological limitations of the time, now Square will be doing it on purpose because "artistic vision" (or "more money" rather). Anyway, I don't care about the remake because I didn't want/need it in the first place. I will never stop being upset about it. Especially since they got rid of the original gameplay. Also, I don't think you guys know what "episodic" means. It means that every episode, there was something different happening, and you didn't have to watch them in order to understand what's going on.

But while that can be forgiven due to technological limitations of the time, now Square will be doing it on purpose because "artistic vision" (or "more money" rather). What they did in 1997 isn't really comparable to what I said though. See, you start the game in Midgar, then you go back to Midgar near the end of the game. If they really want to make each episode feel like a "full game", this can't happen, because a new game needs new environments and such. Make sense? FF7 was my first RPG. Before it, I didn't know there was such a genre of game. I instantly fell in love. It introduced me to the entire genre, and I love it for that. However, I don't think it is the best RPG ever; nor even the best FF game.
I've never been upset about the remake; I've always wanted one. Yes, I'll admit, I always imagined a more direct, turn-based remake with latest graphics, but I know I'm in the small minority of those who still love turn based battles. So, not upset. I am, however, worried. If they don't handle it right, its going to be a huge disappointment. So, I want it to be good and to be a success. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!
