I worked as the self checkout clerk at Kroger for 3 years, it truly gives you perspective how stupid the general public really is. It's mind blowing how it can tell you "The item has not been scanned, remove it from the bagging area" literally 10 fucking times and they look right at me with their hands in the air like it's speaking japanese to them and they are completely clueless on what to do.

LISTEN AND DO WHAT IT SAYS. How complicated is that? Morons. The item didn't scan, fucking scan it again. It's telling you that.

lol what idiots? This is the entire point of self checkout lines

I don't care what anyone else is doing, I have no interaction with people (well except for the cute girl monitoring the machines that will eventually take over us all)

What do I care if some idiot has no idea how to work the machine? Doesn't affect me in the slightest. I calmly wait my turn and show them how it's done and fucking leave. EZPZ

You should get handscanners like we have in Sweden in the 3 major chains..

1. Grab a scanner from the scanner station before you step into the store by swiping the store card.
2. Scan every product along the way, you see the total sum on the scanner, also it counts in sales like 2 for 3 etc, and signals if that product is on sale etc.
3. Go to the checkout, dock the scanner, swipe store card, pay (with store card or your debit/credit card).
4. Done

Going with the assumption that you're putting the items in a cart as you do this, this sounds pretty good. Though possibly annoying if you get something that you end up wanting to put back.

America is entirely too stupid for your advanced Swedish methods. I think it's a brilliant idea, but I could see the swarms of morons looking at the scanners like they are a rubix cube and try to steal every other item and then look at the clerk like they did something wrong when the system doesn't let you steal.

It's no more annoying than if you didn't have the scanner. You can just delete items you change your mind on.

Yeah, but you'll do the same thing as you always do if you pick something wrong, put it in the nearest shelf, you can remove the product from the scanner anyway.

always have to go out with the regular checkout line (even though it is a mile long).

Amen! If any of you out there genuinely have any faith in humanity. Work in a place that requires you to deal with the general public for a while and then get back to me. Sometimes I felt like screaming "How the fuck have you even been able to get this far in life being that monumentally brain dead?! Huh?!". Because seriously. The stupidity on display from some people. It's is honestly amazing they don't swallow their own tongue.

Dunno about FF_ Redux as we're in different countries, but around my area you need to have a membership card to use the hand scanners. They also check 10 random items at the pay point the first three times you use one and do random checks after that.

Sounds like my life as IT. 4 years in and I've basically stopped being nice when people do or ask stupid shit, I straight up make them feel small now. Just yesterday a ticket comes in, one of my monitors isn't working. I go over there and instantly see no light on the button.

Him: "I...I don't know what happened it just won't come on"

Me pushing the button repeatedly looking right at him: "Well, that's probably because there's no power going to it"

*pushes cord back in which slipped lose, monitor comes on*

Him: <_<

On topic though, all I use are self checkouts and I personally rarely see any struggles. I agree there are a ton of dumb dumbs but from my experience even they can handle self checkout for the most part.

Where are you from?

But yeah it's pretty much like this. You need membership card.

For us, I think they have checkup of all items in the beginning, then later it's randomized and it's a % of the items (like 60% of the items). And if there are something that doesn't match up, you'll get more random checkups next for the future.

I'm sure people steal, on accident and on purpose, my parents have accidentally stolen stuff, I've done it on accident. Worst is I've scanned something, but never put it in my bag...so yeah. But I guess it's not something they lose too much on, I mean they could cut costs on personnel so maybe those costs balance out whatever items ppl didn't scan... I dunno.

This is typical human behavior sadly enough. If a person knows there is someone else to fix stuff for them they will usually put zero thought into it. Especially if it's free help.
