You know, it gets boring every time when buying just milk, bread, fruits, eggs with ebt.

You deserve to buy something else at least once or twice besides spending ebt on just milk and bread.

I once witnessed two kids (around 16 years old) buying literally $80 worth of candy with foodstamps. That's all they bought.

Finally, another entry in my collection of Things that have Never Happened.

No joke. All candy too, not chips and stuff. Straight up candy.

This entry just keeps on growing more and more marvelous. Thanks!

dude, fuck off with this "things that never happened". I worked at Price Chopper for two years and saw this shit on a daily basis.

Monster 16 packs, and candy. I've seen people buy 12 packs of soda, walk outside, dump it right in the drain and go back in to redeem the deposit so they could by beer.

Don't be so dense, people are real fucking dirt bags.

The stamps shouldn't cover candy or Red Bull, as those just don't fill someone up. Someone might waste all their stamps on that stuff only to keel over and die because they're not getting proper nutrition.

There's no reason for the stamps to exclude baked goods. That's stupid.

So ice cream is included, but pie is excluded? What's the logic behind that? These restrictions are pointless and cruel and can't be made on a rational basis.

well if this moron in question is living off a diet of skittles what is to say they can actually aim properly and put nutritious food into their mouth rather than wasting it on the floor behind them.

This is the exact problem with millennials LMAO. They always feel entitled.

Food stamps recipients don't "deserve" something. For fucks sake, they should be grateful they're getting it in the first place wtf.

"EBT users really deserve a dozen donuts and all the junk food they want because tax payers are paying for it. Others people money pay for their food. So they really deserve to treat themselves!"

The food stamps program was made for lower income families to provide food for their family to live off of. Meat, produce and even spices and seasonings to make food for your family.

Completely wrong.

The foundation for SNAP was first built in 1933 as part of the Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA). The program, referred to as the Federal Surplus Relief Corporation, was established in the midst of the Great Depression, when prices for crops fell dramatically and farms across America were struggling to deal with the excess supply. To support farmers, the Federal government bought basic farm commodities at discount prices and distributed them among hunger relief agencies in states and local communities.

Food stamps is mostly an economic stimulus.

Hell, back when I was like 17, an ex (she was 19) had an EBT card and we would hit up 7/11 on the regular for munchies. Mmmmm pork rinds.

I'm 24 and still do this but remember a lot of CE is extremely sheltered so they often don't believe anything they didn't hear from their parents.

Also I don't have a problem with energy drinks. Monster is coffee to me. Would you complain if they spent FS on coffee?

Pretty much.

I think a lot of people are missing the point here.

The food stamps program was made for lower income families to provide food for their family to live off of. Meat, produce and even spices and seasonings to make food for your family.

It was not created to buy an ice cream cake, a huge bag of Snickers, a multi pack of gum and a case of Red Bull. That's abusing the system. Those things are not meant to live off of. If people want that, they should be paying with their own money for it.

For the people saying they should be able to treat themselves. They're still able to purchase junk food like chips and ice cream. But I'm sorry... stuff like gum, breath savers, energy drinks, and pies should be excluded. That's extreme.

It isn't abusing the system though. They need the money. They just happen to be spending it wrong. They're fucking themselves over and limiting the money they have for better food. The people with better spending habits shouldn't be hurt or prevented from treating themselves because some idiots chose ice cream over chicken this month.

There's no need for intensive nanny-state regulation by the government. Just give people money and let them use it however they see fit. If they waste it on things they don't need, the lack of money itself will be punishment enough. If they decide to save the rest of the month to celebrate for one day, let them. If they don't feed their kids, call CPS. Trying to control what people buy will just waste time and money without helping anyone.

Evidence supports that particular story more than the ones that support all the overwhelming abuse witnessed by teenagers, so yes I would believe it. Once the evidence lines up with majority of welfare recipients abusing the system then sure, I'd believe the anecdotes. But since that's not true, I'm skeptical. You believe in everyone's Bigfoot stories as well?

I know it may be hard to believe seeing as you probably don't get out much but it is entirely believable that someone abuses EBT. Just because more use it properly than not, that doesn't mean it is unheard of and anyone speeking of it without video evidence is lying.

tl;dr: grocery spending habit of food stamps recipients is basically no different from non-recipients

Then... it's a success?

so my thoughts are:

there is a statistically significant difference between SNAP and non-SNAP purchasers, but it is very small

americans have an awful diet

we should stop subsidizing corn

I could maybe agree to testing a limitation of SNAP from purchasing sugar-sweetened beverages, but I expect it wouldn't matter much since most SNAP recipients have money theyd use to get soda the way they can use money to get alcohol and tobacco

sugar is worse for us than alcohol and tobacco and most illegal drugs but we subsidize it

gubmints bad
