In the west nobody's kids look after them. They just throw them into a retirement home and then never visit.

I think that would be worse than not having any kids at all.

If you have a medical need to be in a nursing home it doesn't matter if you have kids

How ungrateful!

It probably has a lot to do with why our generation has a lot less appreciation for having children.

Quite a bit of elderly folk in first world countries don't actually end up in nursing homes. TV cliches just make it seem like that's inevitable for everybody when they get old. It's not.

Many people who put moderate effort in living healthy and avoided body-breaking careers/pass times throughout their middle ages don't lose a lot of their mobility in old age. It's not uncommon to see this pattern in less developed countries where old men are still expected to tend to their farms/livestock...because no one else will. They don't look like fitness models, but many of those men still look thick as fuck with vascular hands. Granted there's still a bit of luck involved, anyone can get hit with crippling diseases or genetic issues. But people who get some form of daily exercise and abstain from organ-damaging habits have much better odds of keeping their late life independence.

I know, I've worked in elderly care facilities for years. A huge portion of residents in need of daily care are basically people who neglected to take care of themselves by passing on unhealthy impulses (especially drinking and smoking, both VERY common habits in earlier decades). And they pay for it in their golden years by losing much of the independence and mobility. Obesity is another huge contributor in the US. There's so many fat elderly people in care facilities, often because they didn't take care of their leg joints. Sometimes it's not about an unhealthy diet of fried foods or drinking. Sometimes they just messed up their body so much that they can no longer exercise effectively (run/walk) to fix it.

Thankfully more than half of the US's elderly population do not end up living in a nursing facility except when they finally need hospice care. Quite a few able-bodied elderly people die at home from natural causes without ever having to need assisted care. So living without kids isn't as dooming in a developed nation, what with public transit and frequent product advancements.

Part of the reason so many grandparents end up in nursing homes is because they burnt the fuck out of themselves providing for their families. This burden is typically absent for people who never had kids, hence why they're more likely to remain able-bodied well into their 80-90's.
