ISPs and media groups have dropped the alert system with an admission that it isn't up to the job. While the program was supposedly successful in "educating" the public on legal music and video options, the MPAA states that it just couldn't handle the "hard-core repeat infringer problem" -- there wasn't much to deter bootleggers.

They're pretty much right... I remember when I did managed network services support at my old job... We ended up landing a hotel company as a customer, and we managed networks for a bunch of their hotels across the country. Every day we had a bunch of DMCA violation notices we had to forward along to them because their customers would torrent porn at their hotels all the time.

That was pretty much a 40 hour per week job by itself.

edit: Damn it... piracy*

Honestly, piracy would go away if exclusivity stopped existing and accessibility is better.

I haven't torrented a video game since I got a steam account.

I wouldn't say you can't get them... ISPs just stopped sending them to people, probably because it used more of their resources than it was worth to do that.

I got one once for something I hadn't even downloaded -- it was some NBC TV show from 1984 that I had never even heard of. I called Verizon to ask about this, and the rep told me it wasn't even an issue I should worry about. Just said to password protect my network (which it was) and to make sure I don't torrent copyrighted material.

It's possible that the person who sent it to you misread or mistyped the IP address when trying to find out who was responsible.

I believe they only send them if the copyright holder files a complaint. Basically, some movie/TV/music studio would be on the torrent network and records the IP of anyone who connects to download or host. They'd then file a complaint with the ISP for those addresses.

And it's usually HBO or Disney. I think they have whole departments dedicated to stopping piracy of their product. Talk about meaningless jobs lol.

Definitely to HBO. Torrented season 4 of got for my girlfriend when it came out. Got the letter two days later. Promptly tossed it in the trash.

Now what do you do if you keep getting letters or told you will be dropped from the ISP? And what if this happens with all available ISPs in the area?

Is a VPN really 100% immunity from these things?

Essentially, the ISPs know that they aren't going to turn someone's service off because of this. The hotel customer I mentioned must have received about 5000 DMCA notices from the time they became a customer until the time I quit.

And with a VPN, your source IP address would be different, so the complaint would be filed with whoever owns the source IP address that you're "really" coming from in that case instead of you.

So basically the ISPs themselves are middle men when it comes to these complaints? I mean, it's not like the ISP wants to lose people who are paying for internet, so I can see the bind they're in. >_>

Yup. Essentially, they get an email with a DMCA complaint tied to a particular IP address with a timestamp and some details of what content was allegedly obtained. Then some employee(s) at that ISP figures out who had that IP address at the time mentioned in the complaint, and they forward the email to that person or the person who is the contact on record for a particular company.

I rarely hear about the letters for games. 9/10 times it's for TV shows, movies or music downloads.

I pirated a ton of games, I don't think the developers notice or care to waste resources.

Yeah no, Trump will turn American internet into a shit tier police state. As it is, America isn't fairing well under ideal circumstances as far as internet speeds, accessibility, privacy, etc.
