Play as a bad-ass Sauron-wannabe, send minions out Pikmin style to do your bidding, good is hilariously inept or outright non-existent.

First game was great but the corruption/morality system made you feel like "unusually kind villain" (actually a legitimate tactic - some villains work by getting good PR and slowly twisting good people to their bidding) or "psychopathic force of destruction". Also you could choose between a master tactician or a sultry seductress for your mistress. It was a nice twist on the Lord of the Rings-style storyline.

Second game was good, too, you actually chose between two different paths of villainy (domination or destruction) and you could actually do more things in your lair, actually sit on your throne, and so forth. Yet at the same time it felt like there was something missing from the first game, and I can't quite place it. Some little spark or something. Oh well, mind controlling the drooling masses is kinda fun (wow that made me sound psychopathic. That's Overlord for ya.)

There was a Wii spin-off where you played as a kid who inherited the Overlord armor which looks hilariously bulky on him, and you pretty much fixed the mess your father and siblings made while, in the end, pitting your siblings against each other and letting them tear each other apart. Where the first Overlord was Lord of the Rings, this one was more Mother Goose stuff, though with several twists like Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf Mother being the same being

And there was a DS spin-off where you played a crack team of Minions (including one that's been in the series since the beginning!) to investigate some disturbances in Wii Overlord's domain. I haven't beaten it, and I haven't felt motivated to beat it, even though I'm in the final area. I should probably fix that.

And...
I...
think that's it.
There definitely wasn't a controversial game released that was more of a Gauntlet/Diablo lite game with forced references to internet jargon and such, where the game was more focused on four undead stand-ins for the Overlord that absolutely hated each other and were forced to work together to fight a plague of cuteness that was toxic to their very beings.
Because, I mean, if such a game had come out, it would have been a waste of potential and funding that left the fanbase mixed and overall a bad taste in everyone's mouths, with some people simply not allowed to like it and others not allowed to dislike it, before eventually fading into obscurity.
Nope.
Definitely didn't happen.

There wasn't? I don't even remember not hearing that they weren't making that.

I got the whole series (or at least, the whole series that is on PC and exists) in a bundle or Steam sale yonks ago, but never even finished the first one. It was cool though, I'll probably give it another go at some point.

EDIT: Oh, hey, turns out they're all on sale on Steam right now. And since I already own 1, RH and 2, I can get the remaining zero games in the Ultimate Evil Edition for about £2! That's a good idea, right?
(It's about £6 otherwise. Right now, it's actually way more expensive to get the three-game Classic Pack than the three-and-not-another-one game Ultimate Evil Collection)

I'm actually shocked that Steam does that - discounts on bundles when you already own most of the games in it. (Or rather, only charging you for the game you don't own, at the bundle discount price.)

Have they done that since they first started offering bundles and I just never noticed, or is this relatively new?

Anyways, I think I might actually pick up the non-existence game if it's under $4. I mean, I actually never jumped on the hypothetical hate train because I really often hate the other people who do these things, even for games that might be legitimately terrible should they exist.

Okay I'm getting tired of this XD

Welp, looks like I'm gonna try Fellowship of Evil with my own hands.

I do like that the writer, Rihanna Pratchett, definitely had her father's wit rub off on her. I mean, she's not her father, and her writing style is definitely distinct and very good on its own merits to begin with, but there's definitely a familiar and pleasant echo of Terry's wit in the tone of the games.

That being said, the games simply aren't for everyone, so I don't blame you for not enjoying them that much.

Tried Fellowship of Evil.

Okay.

This game isn't really that bad.

I mean, it's not great, and it's not Overlord standard fare, but you know what? I enjoyed what I've played so far. It was, at the very least, worth 5 dollars (and I got it for less than 4 thanks to that heads up about the bundle)

Playing as the necromancer netherghul, enjoying blasty stuff, it's good fun.

I also love that Inferna is the closest to the "standard" Overlord and is a genuinely kick-ass intimidating woman, but I'm not really in the mood to play her at the moment.

I wish there was a way to search for artwork, stories, and other media for these games without also running into stuff from the unrelated manga/anime of the same name or that one Transformers character.

I really enjoyed the first game, have the second one, but don't feel like dragging out my 360 to play it. Just bought them on Steam.

I think the second one is overall a better game than the first, but I will be the first to say that it feels like it's missing some of the charm of the first game.
