for the first time since I was a little kid.

The first episode had a lot of not so subtle gay stuff going on. The comet couple were dudes. Funny how you don't even notice these things when you're a kid. I guess it's kind of neat in an ahead of its time kind of way.

I forgot how much this show was designed to sell the toys. There's a even scene where Skeletor hypes up how that jaw guy can change the weapons on his arm, lol. That shit worked though. I had all the toys.

It seems like every episode follows the same exact pattern: Skeletor wants to use a magic artifact to gain control of Castle Greyskull, Prince Adam turns into He-Man, gets owned after about two minutes and then they cut away to plan B, and then He-Man comes back at the end to kick ass for real this time. I just didn't remember how often He-Man got his ass handed to him.

Best I can give the reboot is the more cohesive lore and at least there's a visual difference between adam and he man. Still love the original series though lol. I did read somewhere that in the reboot they were going to bring in hordak with occasional team ups with she ra.

One thing about rotoscoping, they sure knew how to pick their models. :3

That show had some fine looking women (most of them probably traced from the same woman). The Sorceress was a total MILF.

Methinks the animators had a "Teela ass-shot" quota per episode.

Speaking of the show itself, I watched an episode or two recently and I was delightfully surprised at how genuinely evil Skeletor was. He-Man sparred Skeletor's life in a fight and, rather than show any gratitude or humility, Skeletor immediately attempted to kill the Sorceress.

Such a fun villain. He's almost always the best part of any He-Man adaptation.

It's pretty obvious that Alan Oppenheimer just had a blast doing that show, by how consistently campy and over-the-top Skeletor is all the time. Meanwhile, John Erwin mostly just phoned it in, and added reverb.

Yeah. He voiced a couple of other characters in the show as well, like Man-At-Arms and Mer-Man. It's said that they gave him his different character lines in rapid succession because it was funny to watch him change his voice so dramatically.

The name sounds familiar. Hmm... looks like he worked on a bunch of other classic cartoons.

Transformers
G.I. Joe
JEM
Tiny Toons
Batman: TAS
Batman Beyond

On another note I'm impressed with the quality of the animation. There are a lot of reused frames but they don't seem to shy away from scenes that require new animations like a lot of the other cartoons of that era. The rotoscoping gives it a cinematic feel at times. It's nothing special now but it must have raised the bar when it came out.

The repetitive plot was something that threw me off about the original Voltron too - seemed every episode was "Send a Ro beast - starts tearing stuff up - team has to combine to defeat it"

Syndicated kids shows needed episodic status quo to survive. All the "development" they ever got is the newest toy getting featured in an episode or two.

The flip side of that, is that Netflix Voltron got several complaints that Voltron wasn't in every episode.

I don't recall He-Man becoming repetitive. Maybe it's because they always shuffled around the cast. You never knew which allies or adversaries would be along for the ride. I watched the entire series about a decade ago.

The Sorceress

Skeletor won't go after her one on one like he will He-Man. It takes teaming up and using magical objects for him to challenge her. Plus, she gave He-Man his power and can take it away.
