This is such horrible phrase on more then one level. First it is complaining when males show emotions, the people who use this term are many times the ones complaining that males don't show emotions. Next it is a gendered insult . That is like someone saying women can do something because they are having their monthlies.

Fragile male egos is supposed to be more of an insult to when men get into fights, have stupid challenges, etc. to make sure they're the "better man"

But 3rd wave feminism came in and decided it sounded like a good insult just in general.

The insults always been a thing to mean that. Now when I see it used it's usually just a general insult towards men by new wave feminists.

Women have far more fragile egos than men, lol. I've known plenty of women that hold crazy grudges over stupid shit, for a very long time. Men typically let conflict slide off the shoulders after a while.
