He ends up with a .608 OBP, the second best all-time, behind only...Barry Bonds' actual 2004 season.

Well, when you're on THAT many steroids, there's not much strategy left...

If player has an OPS well over 1.000, it actually makes sense to walk him almost every time. I think Bonds even got walked with the bases loaded several times that season.

Yeah it seems like a solid strategy to walk him instead of letting him get a grand slam

Anyone mind explaining what an intentional walk is for someone with little to no knowledge of baseball? this seems interesting and fun.

It's when the team decides to just put the batter on base (i.e. they intentionally issue him a walk) rather than allow him to swing. It's usually a terrible strategy to put people on base, but it makes sense in cases like Bonds' where he was averaging more than one base per plate appearance.

Basically the catcher stands up with his arm way out of the strike zone on the otherside of the hitter like so (a very common sight as a giants fan in the early 2000s when Barry Bonds was hitting)

It signals that they don't want to pitch to him, and the pitcher basically lobs 4 unhittable pitches.

That's the literal definition of it, and that is what counts towards Bonds' record breaking 2004 total. He's also one of 6 players to be intentionally walked with the bases loaded (which means that this forced a run home).

They just changed the rule this year so that there's no actually pitches involved anymore (basically the batter is automatically awarded the base) to speed up the game and because some shitty pitchers struggle with the throw and miss the target

Yup. Rather get one run against them than risk a grand slam

God baseball sounds so complicated with all its terms and shit.

But it seems to be really fun... too bad it's not really a thing in my country...

Bonds is the greatest ever. Even before the HGH, he had 3 MVPS, should have had at least 1 more (91) & 96 is debatable. He already was the only member of the 400/400 club (HRs & SBs) and the only member of the 40/40 club that wasn't on steroids.

The media sucking Sosa & McGwire's dicks (much inferior players) all of 98 led Bonds to show people what a true talent could do, even in his late 30s, if they wanted to just bulk up & destroy the baseball.

And for those who never paid much attention, probably at least a third of the pitchers he was facing were juiced as well-- pitchers were more likely to be on steroids, HGH, etc. than position players.

Also Hank Aaron and most players of that time used greenies (amphetamines), which the media and fans love to ignore.

Oh wow I didn't know they changed that.

Also I have a few friends who pitched college level and pro ball, and they all say that throwing intentional walks and also trying to throw the ball to first after a grounder are the hardest things ever lol. Makes sense when they spend 99% of their time winding up and throwing it as hard as they can.

Almost all baseball players were on speed from the 50s on. Many still are, they just all claim to have ADHD or something similar now so they can get away with it.
