Thinking of Louis C.K. and Dave Chappelle here. Now don't get me wrong, they're both still funny. I laughed at their specials. Dave still has that masterstroke of punchline setup and Louis still has that ability to make everyday normal things sounds utterly ridiculous.

But overall both were noticeably weaker sets. Louis' material was mostly irrelevant rambling and Dave is sounding like an old guy struggling to understand the topical issues of the day.

I guess part of the typical comedian's toolset is playing the part of a broke sadsack and going through life losing all the time. I suppose being an A list celebrity with millions in the bank makes you a lot less relatable.

A notable exception is Bill Burr, but he still doesn't seem hollywood famous.

I saw Louis CK live like 3 years ago and I remember that my friends and I were all pretty disappointed by his set. I think Louis is a highlights reel kind of guy

From what I've heard he does a lot of new material live all the time, which is quite brave in comedian terms because a lot of these guys go years doing the same bits. So maybe you were unlucky and got a trial set night or something.
