Has Nintendo officially commented on whether they have a successor handheld ready to replace the 3DS (it's already six years old), whether the Switch IS that handheld, or if they plan to maintain 3DS support for the foreseeable future?

going forward, Nintendo will develop for one system - the Switch. the 3DS is on legacy support. it will receive games Nintendo (and other Japanese devs) can develop on the cheap using existing resources. Look at all the recent 3DS titles - a Mario Maker port, a 5th Fire Emblem game, enhanced ports of old Atlus titles, yet another Monster Hunter update, etc. Nintendo aren't going to completely abandon a successful system that can still generate some profits, but it isn't a priority. Other Japanese devs will stay on board for a bit longer because Japanese devs are conservative to a fault, but those titles will likely be Japan-focused because it would be tough sell to retailers on a 3DS game taking up shelf space in 2018 or beyond.

I don't have a problem with the Switch, I think it's a neat console
It's just that you can't deny the fact there is a difference between a handheld and a console
Yes, it's not like 1998 when the Nintendo console could play Ocarina of Time and the Nintendo handheld could play...Tetris
Today we can play Smash Bros on both the 3DS AND the Wii U, the border between the handheld quality and the console becamse smaller
Some games even come out for both consoles with the same quality (mostly indie games)

BUT the difference still exist - can you really imagine the Switch having the same amount of games as the 3DS and the Wii U combined?
No, because consoles games take more time to make - and making "handheld" game on a hybrid consoles sounds weird to me
Possible, yes, but I don't see many companies doing it

If the Switch ends up being the 3DS replacement you can be sure it will have a very shallow library compared to what could have been a 3DS successur

Nintendo's president confirmed that there will be a successor, which may be a Switch Mini depending on the Switches success.

I understand those concerns but I've also seen Aonuma make comments that he would consider making a top-down Zelda for Switch inbetween open world games so at the very least both style of zelda games would still be present

If you're trying to compare a console with a handheld, you should be looking at how long it took from Awakening's announcement to its release, not a title that's a) a remake, thus already having the groundwork laid out for it, and b) capable of reusing many assets from the previous two Fire Emblem games.

edit: Which was 1 year and 7 months from initial announcement to English release.
