Numerical methods
Complex variable calculus
Combinatorics
Interest theory

And then the standard calc series, diff eq, linear algebra, modern algebra, and real analysis

I don't remember if my physical chemistry classes counted toward anything or not

Interest theory sounds neat. Did you like complex? It was one of my favourite classes by far

Not really, but the professor was bad.

Interest theory is okay. It's a lot of the same thing over and over again. I think I could be an actuary for awhile tho if I didn't have other plans.

combinatorics and modern have been my favorite classes. I'd like to take some group theory class, and continue with quantum chemistry. Also should probably take partial diff eq for good measure

Complex calculus gets to a whole new level of awesome once you start going into signal processing and realize how immensely useful it is.

iPRqhlN

i don't understand how to set this up. the 2 examples she did were a polynomial and a cube

like do i evalute at those points as x1 - 1, x2 - sqrt(3) ? do i just leave it as a single variable like:

f(x) = [x - 1, x - sqrt(3)]^T and then proceed using lagrange multipliers?

bleh, i'm tired of school

i remember we used a fair amount in quantum, but they always wound up being real-valued because we'd always multiply by the complex conjugate to do something something (it's been a minute since that class)

doubt i'll ever get into signal processing, but maybe? right now i'm interested in computational organic chem, but idk if that's what i'll actually be working on when i start next fall. like i know it'll be in organic chem, but i don't really want to do pure synthetic or anything. i'd really like to learn about computational methods and actually put my math background to use (because it's p rare for most chemists, but especially organic ones)

A lot of DSP is actually just applied statistics, which IMO can turn out useful in a variety of fields. After all, most anything can be regarded as signals - images, audio, any sort of time series, any data collected from the real world, etc. So while not always crucial, it's rarely if ever completely useless or inapplicable.

yeah, and i know there's a ton of that in chemistry because of the numerous spectroscopy techniques. but most of my experience there has been in qualitative analysis

i really should've taken more stats class. i took one for social science majors like 6 years ago when i didn't know what i wanted to do.

also word up praise jebus for a gf i can actually ask for help on these things

Here in Germany, a lot of computational chemistry groups tend to focus on biochemistry more than organic chemistry.

I think computational org is more prevalent in industry (eg drug screening) (although, that's still a fair bit of biochem too)

i'm okay with that as well, i've done a couple years of biophysics/biochemistry research (x-ray crystallography), so i'm at least a little familiar with that area. i'm like 2 classes away from a biochem minor, but fuck that noise. i'm not taking metabolism because i'm not going to spend that much time memorizing so much shit.

just gimme that sweet, sweet industry job so i can have a 9-5 and then be a real adult finally

thanks, hopefully not. i have my moments, but i kind of gave up on school for the last year. i do everything last minute and don't study for exams, which has had very mixed results. this class tho, i've missed quite a few more points than any other, so i'm hoping she gives me a pity pass. i get the feeling not tho.

everything in calc, linear algebra, and diff eq was so idk

modern algebra, real analysis, and combinatorics haven't been. as i mentioned above, those were my favorite (less so for analysis, but it was still interesting).

Back when I was a chem major, I had two mandatory biochem modules: intro to biochem (enzymes, proteins, amino acids) and intro to metabolism (fats, sugars, Krebs cycle etc).

That stuff was just about tolerable, any more and I would have def gone insane lol

In my experience, the second semester of second year is when things became more about arguments, logic, and proofs than computation.

Up until then, even us math majors had to take calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations, which are all very computational and thus pretty boring (IMO).

In winter semester second year, at least at my school, we had to take real analysis, which on the surface is like calculus but has a very different flavour; calculus does "proofs by intuition" ("take the limit as the width of the rectangles gets small" or whatever) so you could apply the results to solve word problems, whereas nothing is left to intuition in analysis. Most analysis classes don't even assume the existence of real numbers; they show how to construct them from the rationals and set theory. The trade-off is that there isn't much time in the class for applications, but after building up all the theory, the applications you learned in first year are completely doable anyway.

I think this is the point when people in other majors (CS, physics) are likely to take discrete math, too. The computations in that class, from my understanding, are pretty standard, but it's very logic-based and this makes it challenging for non-math students, I think.

From there, we basically had to choose between applied and pure (theoretical) math. I went the theoretical route, so my math classes were, again, very proof-based and didn't worry about applications for the most part, although most of them did have applications if you cared to look for them. I think applied math also does a lot of proofs, but obviously spends more time on applications to the sciences.

Anyway, looking back, I agree that computational math is extremely boring and uninspired. It's unfortunate because most high school math curricula don't emphasize the other, more representative aspects of math at all. I thought math was basically like high school calculus forever, and I only majored in it because I was good at computing stuff. I even have some friends that I think would have really enjoyed my proof-based classes, but high school math turned them off from it.

damn, going back through the test's relevant homeworks is frustrating. i should have put just a bit more effort into them... :(

if i hadn't tried doing the hw the morning it was due, i'm confident i'd have gotten A's. like linear least square and quadritic minimizers are incredibly easy.

my only worry is if she asks any proof-based questions, because my knowledge of linear alg and vector calc is now p garbage. sigh, i just want this shit to be over

and our final project looks to be quite a bit of work
