mfers too lazy or scared to write an actual ending to their films. i mean sometimes it works but most of the time it's bull. if I know beforehand if a movie ends like that I will not watch it

just watched The Wrestler btw

In all fairness, endings are literally the hardest things to write.

I LOVED the ending to Inception, made absolute sense to do it that way too.

The "AWWWWWWWW" followed by huge applause when the top didn't fall but it MIGHT have been just about to was amazing when I first saw it on opening night. We were all rooting for Dom so much.

how so? you can write it like you write any other part of the story. it's just required that you make decisions and take the risk that people may not like your decisions on how to end your story

You ever write?

It's the hardest because it's supposed to be the culmination of your work, and one needs to not only satisfy themselves but satisfy the audience. It's the last thing that's going to be experienced in a work, and if it's not done right, it's the only thing people are going to remember.

I wouldn't say they're open ended though. 2001 maybe? But 2001 was open start, middle, end....just nuts.

2001 and The Shining where what came to mind to me. Two movies I love.

I think they are good when they are done tastefully. You still have to wrap up all the major plot threads, but you make it ambiguous enough that people can draw some of their own conclusions about the possible implications. Of course, to do that, you have to have a good plot to begin with, and you can't just cut to black and leave things unresolved and expect people to draw their own conclusions. I really enjoy when movies become sorts of litmus tests for people's personalities, provoking arguments and discussions about what 'really happened', like with Inception or Shelter Island.

I don't like open endings because leaving it up to my interpretation means I'm just stuck with my shitty ending. I'd rather the creator make one themselves because it'd probably be better than anything I'd come up with.

You just proved TC's point. There is a lot of pressure on endings so if a writer/director leaves it open-ended, they look like a coward.

never had a problem with endings

you can leave some things open but the main questions need to be answered

Not necessarily. Again, if the writer felt it was a good note to end on then that's on them--it was their script. And sometimes it's best to leave it open so as not to corner yourself into one predictable or unsatisfying ending. But it doesn't always work because opinions are vast and varied. You guys don't like it, that's pretty clear, but that doesn't always mean the vast majority of open endings are bad like he's trying to claim.

Nah it's legitimately good, idk if you're familiar with the Coen Brothers movies like Fargo but it's made by them. If you don't like open endings you may not like how it ends, but the directing and acting is stellar throughout so you should be able to appreciate it quite a bit just for that part.

He jumps you hear the roar of the crowd for about three seconds. Then black for a few seconds.. before credits

I'd take it that's how long it took. He jumps, lands,.... dead
