I made the decision to cut cords a while ago, and didn't really look back. I figured it was pretty rational given the obvious cost benefit and also the freedom of choice benefit also. Seemed like more for less, no brainer, etc.

So pretty much everything I read or watch or listen to is something I put on explicitly, e.g. a podcast, netflix show, streaming music service, website, etc.

Thing is, my folks still use Sky and read the paper. And I gotta say, even though it's a whole lot of crap, even though it's overly expensive and you don't get to choose when to watch what you want to watch, I kind of miss that.

I remember growing up and a lot of every day culture being around what everyone was tuning in to watch at 7pm or whatever. I think this is why my parent's are so resistant to streaming services. Even though I tell them that literally every episode of Q.I ever is on Netflix, they still want to catch it on channel Dave at 8pm every night. Like they base dinner around it, that's how important that is.

And I kind of get it. Seems like I'm just not a part of any group anymore with how convenient all media has become. it's too private, almost.

Have your parents ever head of DVR? I mean aren't those standard with cable packages these days?

I don't know if disconnected is the word I'd use but I do often feel overwhelmed with all the choices available

No matter how much I remind them about the DVR function, they never use it. They only ever want to watch what's on right now.

Damn. Well I say keep trying. Its the kind of thing that once you use it, you'll never go back.
