We wouldn't necessarily invade just Syria, if history is any indication.

On the contrary. A war starting up would probably hurt the Democrats more than the Republicans, especially if it surrounds Syria.

One of the major things that people thought Hillary was going to do was start a war. Now, while Donald is in the White House, and would be the one starting it, most of their base sees it as justified. That means that Democrats supporting it will be a wash for the election.

But if they don't support it, and try to oppose another war? Then they look like the heartless politicians who do not want justice for all those killed by the chemical attack and otherwise in Syria. Republicans could eat that up. "Democrats tried to block actions that would save countless civilian lives" is a headline that would ruin any candidate.

The only way that this war could hurt Republicans is if war weariness is still high. Considering that most Donald supporters are hating this attack because it could draw us into another war, that may hurt him in the long run...but I doubt it, unless the war truly is long.

This is what I find (about ISIS, but gives idea of how Americans feel about war in the current climate)

Basically, Americans want to fight ISIS, but not in a protracted war with ground troops. I don't know but would presume that applies for military intervention in this context.
