Holy shit! I expected that twist in the end from JK, but nevertheless enjoyed it. However I did a NOT expect the boy to come back, though I shouldn't be surprised since all movie they showed him being a glutton for punishment.

The writing and acting was top notch. The movie made it thrilling/intense to watch someone play the drums and get taught. The music was great as was the final drum solo. The editing during the drum scenes was fantastic as well.

The ending was so brilliant.

Why?

It all comes back to what J.K. Simmons said, "Because the next Charlie Parker would never be discouraged."

At this point in the film Simmons is just trying to get revenge on Miles Teller for getting him fired, and he does a damn good job. This final scene isn't some elaborate test to get Teller to step up his game, it's just Simmons trying to destroy this dude's life. You can see the genuine anger in his eyes as Teller starts his unannounced solo, which is is fucking brilliant because Simmons is forced to go along with it or else he looks stupid. And it's personal for Teller too, he's driven by his own revenge for Simmons backstabbing him.

Simmons gets angrier and angrier up to a point where you see something change in his eyes. He's done it, this kid is crushing it not just in spite of the circumstances, but because of them. You see the moment in the eyes where Simmons' eyes change and he realizes he has to help him. His anger doesn't fade, it doesn't turn into sympathy, it turns into excitement.

And then that grand finale, fuck. The very last moment where you see Simmons is given the opportunity to ruin Teller's life or make him a great. The moment hangs, and then the triumphant final note, and then the cut to credits. It's brilliant, there is so much information and so much emotion contained in that single note, and then the film ends on that high, on the climax itself.

We're not sure about Simmons up to that point, but in that one flick of the wrist bringing in the orchestra we see that his revenge has been entirely replaced by excitement. Because the next Charlie Parker would never be discouraged.

Very well put IMO

I always viewed Teller & Simmons characters as the same people, just with a difference in age and experience - two guys with an obsession not necessarily with jazz music, but the concept of greatness.

They are so consumed with this idea that it ruins everything else in their lives and destroys everything they touch. So these two guys get together and there is just this crushing animosity between the two of them because they're both chasing this same ideal, both just obsessing over reaching greatness in their respective roles as student and teacher.

In the end, it's just as you say - it's not some elaborate plot to bring out the best in Miles, but it's to destroy him. Simmons doesn't care about Miles as a person, a friend, a musician, etc; he cares about the idea of reaching that type of greatness. So in the last moments of that final scene, when Miles is doing the huge solo and you see the change on their faces, it's because through all of this bullshit, they finally created something truly great and finally pushed themselves beyond what they thought was possible, and in a sense, both character got what they wanted.
