It just has a lot of talk considering it's the new PS4 exclusive and has loads of stellar reviews. It may sell 2 or 3 million max WW. Something likeWitcher is mainstream, going from selling sub 1 mill to nearly 15 million units.

The newest one sold around 4 million units. It's definitely not niche anymore. I'd still say Persona 4 Gold was even niche even though it was more popular than prior games in the series. P5 is where the series begins to hit its stride as one of those series more people (mostly just those within the gaming community) will begin to recognize and understand more.

Agreed. Yes more people are into it especially because of Smash but it's from a system seller. Not mention the internet has made it far more likely for fans to band together making a series look far bigger than it is.

Critical acclaim =/= not niche

Not sure what's making you think that's the case. There's plenty of highly reviewed games that are still very niche. While I wouldn't call Persona niche per say, it's still far from even Dark Souls caliber. Maybe with some more spin offs and a Persona 6 it can get there, but it isn't there now.

I'm not sure if you understand what "mainstream" entails. That would imply complete laymans or casual gamers would recognize the name, which simply isn't happening anytime soon. Like I said before, I can see this capping out anywhere from 2 to 3 (maybe 4 but I doubt it) million units, which is good for a game and genre like this, and would make it a popular series, but even that still wouldn't be "mainstream."

EDIT: Also P4 didn't sell all that well. sub 1 mill is the highest this series has ever reached before now. And them milking it has nothing to do with its rise to mainstream. It just proved that the series had a constant fan following, albeit being a small fanbase at the time.

The thing with Persona 3 and 4 is that they got milked to hell so most people who are tangential to the series have heard of it.

Between the fightning game, PSP re-releases, Dancing game, Persona Q, and anime series (partially available on netflix). P5 is mostly just riding that wave.

To a small extent, yes. It's more apt to say it gets 'casualized', but remember this is Atlus so they're pretty good about not catering to the masses. So far the only casualization I'm seeing in P5 is a button shortcut to attack an enemy's weakness and saferooms mid dungeon. Both of those are improvements imo.
