Language is, at its simplest, the way that we communicate, and so if I say something and what I say means something now that it didn't mean in the past, it's effectively changed by virtue of the fact that people know that I'm using the updated meaning.

Do people get too bent out of shape about this? Yeah.

That said, some "evolutions" are stupid as shit.

Example: under these "evolutions," you can literally use the word "literally" to literally describe literally anything even if it's literally not literal. Literally.

So now I'm a 'librul hippy' because I get bent out of shape over words (except that I don't and I pointed that out in my first post)? Riiiiiiiiiiiiight.

It depends entirely on the context of the conversation. What irritates me is the amazing inability people have to extrapolate information. You have to spell out what you mean like you're talking to a 5 year old. All the time.

I think the nerds would be a lot more tolerant towards it if the other side came to them and said "hey, we know this word means actually means that, but we want it to mean this now.... We know, we know, there is already a word for that too, just go with us, we think it'll be better this way." Instead of it going down like "I don't care that that doesn't actually mean this, I've already learned it this way, I'm not going to learn a new way."

Another significant trait of nerds is that don't understand inference and implications. Any sort of vagueness will confused the living shit out of them.

Teachers in the 90s. They tried so hard to ensure that "ain't" never became a word. Now look at them, the fools!

And also the people who get all bent out of shape over the word literally. They were all just screaming into the word, not realizing that they were just standing on the precipice of a paradigm shift in vocabulary. Now the word literally means one thing and also its opposite, and there's nothing they can do about it.

Makes sense to come to a consensus definition in a debate. But if you use a different, "evolved" meaning than the original author meant, it's dishonestly addressing what they said.

A better term would be like "bro". Like I could call you bro and you ain't even gotta be my real brother. In fact I call girls "bro" as well.

So "evolution" is just code for "people use a word contrary to it's real meaning long enough that people forget the real meaning of the word and adapt the new one into their vocabulary"?

I'm not intending to be so. But in the case of gay, it was a used as a slang term for homosexuals to the point that the only time someone uses gay to mean happy is when they are making a joke about homosexuals. As in what Matt Groening did with all the jokes about Smither's sexuality throughout the show. No one uses it to mean happy unless they're 90 years old or making a joke. That's pretty much using a word contrary to it's meaning until people forget the original meaning.

This is still the wrong way to view it. It doesn't update, as in overwriting the previous definition.

Nerds are obsessively preoccupied with orderliness and categorisation and being right about stuff even when normies don't care about it, so when someone gets all three of those things wrong it's of course going to cause a meltdown.
