been wanting to for a while and now's the time

going about it the lazy way, meaning doing no research on my own

I started a thread in our office chat and got some input from nerds there

I'm sure it's not perfect so I'm coming here for second opinions and revisions

here is the list they came up with: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7g28Cy (edit: no graphics card because someone at work was offering theirs used at the time. please offer suggestions)

budget: around $1000-$1200 (I told them $1000 at work)
intentions: vidya gaemz and probably some streaming / video editing
need all peripherals: monitor/keyboard/etc.

opinions, go

You appear to not have a graphics card. Given the rest of that machine I'd say you want at least a 1070, but if you feel like splurging a 1080 is really really nice.

oh right, that's because someone in the office was offering his at a discounted rate, so they weren't looking for one.

I eventually decided to purchase my own and didn't get any further input.

can you explain what you mean by "given the rest of the machine"?

and what's the difference between 1080 and 1070?

The graphics card and CPU do different thing at different speeds. If one is vastly more powerful than the other you're wasting that extra power because it will have to wait on the other part to finish its work before it can apply its own.

And actually looking at it again if you're only going to be running at 1080p then a GTX 1080 is overkill. The 1070 will probably be all the graphics card you need for a few years.

First paragraph makes total sense. It's kinda funny being a CS degree at a tech-first company and not knowing the first damn thing about PC specs.

Who are the local gurus around here for this sort of thing?

Get a 1440p monitor.

There is zero reason to limit yourself to 1080 with those specs

Unless you want to do two monitors in which case dtay at 2 1080p anyways.

You could also consider an Ultrawide.

Yeah I mean what you are getting is easily enough to run an Ultrawide monitor so if you like it I would def recommend doing so.

I never played anything beyond the original content. Cleared Vault of Glass. Leveled to 29, realized Hard mode was pretty much just the same but required optimized gear, and lost interest.

But, I'm definitely invested in it in that if they made a sequel/expansion that was really good, I'd be intrigued.

Don't buy a microatx MoBo unless you specifically need it for something like a small form factor build.

Elaborate

MicroATX motherboards are smaller.

If you are using a case which can fit a full motherboard you are better off having a full one so you have more space for upgrading.

If you want the case size you have selected there is zero reason to put a micro ATX motherboard in it. You could do a MicroATX build if you don't want the full tower though.

Ah. Yeah, definitely not married to that case. I'd probably choose one of my own.

*hasn't even looked at the case*
