33 y/o Beth Fukomoto, a leading Republican politician in Hawaii has QUIT the party and has joined the DEMOCRATS stating she cannot support Donald Trump

She says she was pressured to give up her leadership post at the statehouse after criticizing Trump and resigned from the GOP as she opposes racism and sexism.

She's hoping to become a Democrat but doesn't know if the party will accept her

She is one of the few elected Republicans and was asked to resign her post as House Minority Leader after criticizing Trump at the Women's March.

She sought feedback from voters about leaving and says 3/4 support her move.

Beth was first elected in 2012 and is the youngest to serve as House Minority Leader and represents the community she grew up in.

She was awarded the James Madison Fellowship by the Millenial Action Project for her success

The Washington Post named her as the Top 40 under 40 Rising political stars and was awarded Aspen-Rodel Fellowship for demonstrating outstanding ability to work responsibly across partisan divisions.

Beth said "When the joined the Republican Party 8 years ago, i did so with a group of people my age who were full of hope, ideas and energy. We saw an opportunity to take a political party that was broken in a political system that seemed rigged, and even the playing field. To us, Democrats represented the status quo"

But after going to the legislature, she realized that Democrats were about change and tried to co-operate with fellow Republicans but partisanship "insisted i stop working with Democrats even when it clearly benefited the community"

She and her friends discovered louder and more powerful voices that fought divergence and difference and diversity at every step. She now believes the Republicans are the status quo who want to revert back the good change America has grown accustomed to.

No surprise, the Hawaii Republicans branded her a traitor stating she should have resigned instead of switching parties and allowed another Republican to take her seat.

Fritz Rohlfing said "Fep Fukumoto's decision to abandon the Hawaii Republican Party is unfortunate. I am extremely proud of how our Party welcomes and fosters voices from every background and i look forward to electing more Republicans in Hawaii"..

Democratic Party Leader Tim Vandeveer said he welcomes Beth's support but is still wary of a Republican joining the ranks...

Oh, didn't expect this to be about Beth Fukumoto. She seems cool. Notice the chibis in some of the office pictures.


I actually really don't like that she was asked to leave the Republican party. Like...Trump is unpopular in Hawaii on both sides of the aisle. So the right wing opposition party in Hawaii should be allowed to express their disapproval of Trump. This is how you have two healthy competing parties in the state. Instead the current head of the Republican party is being forced to step down.
