I'm trying to play at least a little of every game I got from this $20 bundle last month. I've played a few of these before like Gone Home ('twas okay) and Dr. Langeskov Blah Blah More Words Go Here ('twas crap)...but most of these are unknown to me. I'm gonna go in the order they're presented, which is a big effin' bummer since the games I wanted to try most are at the very bottom of this list.

This could take some months, especially since I'm busier than normal the next two months...we'll see how it goes.

Good, we're better off without him.

I like the peacefulness of the music and the aesthetic of the background and people...but I knew as soon as I heard the sound the game makes when I jump that I wouldn't like it. Precision jumping and awkward camera ain't gonna go far with me either.

Welp...can't finish this game, not with Google Chrome anyway and I'm not bothering to switch for this text-based adventure.

It's a shame because it caught my interest. I like its music a lot and the story's plot and narrative were engaging enough early on. Unfortunately, it put some clickable items I need to continue outside of my reach -- not like a puzzle either, but like my browser doesn't recognize how big it needs to be. Oh well, I liked it for a minute.

Depression Quest

This was the game that got Zoe Quinn so much grief? I think some out-of-game drama was happening too, but the game itself was inoffensive. I was annoyed at first that this game was explaining itself so much at the beginning, but by the end I think the choice worked. It's reaching out to you with a story that often struggles to have a right choice to prove depression makes everything feel worse. It worked well enough and the writing was fine. It's not a very good game, but it's an interesting thing made.

I'm not well-versed on the big controversy...heard some things, but I dunno what's correct there or not. Depression Quest didn't deserve such hate though as a product -- it's overly clear about its purpose and wasn't so bad in its unusual attempt at something new.

That's on the agenda -- I'm in no-effs-to-give mode for games that give me problems to work right. Some of these games are more just proof of concepts than polished games too, which I can deal with trying but that doesn't mean I'll stick with then. I suspect a lot of these games will get about twenty minutes of playtime before I give up on them.

Farewell, Brother

This is a two-player game I had to play by myself, so take this as you will.

Farewell, Brother has a great little flavor of style to it and the mechanic of two sibling birds trying to competitively knock each other off their pole is a fun concept -- I smiled quickly when it first came on.

That said, since the goal is to either attack the block your opponent's on or to hit a block above your opponent, and the game's autoscrolling you down where you can lose a point...I don't get why anyone should do anything other than climb to the top of the screen and fake each other out on whether you're attacking or climbing when the screen lets you again. I don't see room for satisfying strategy as-is. Maybe there's a dodge button, but the only other action I saw looked like you were putting yourself in more danger...not sure what its purpose was.

The game caught my attention for a moment and I'd like to see this improved, but right now it's just like the very base concept of a game.

I KNOW -- IT'S A BROWSER GAME! After getting this error, I went to check out A(s)century since it was another browser game that least started for me before...and it now gives me this error I don't deserve too. Shame on you, browser games!

I could keep playing this awhile...just got to Level 4 and broke $100 for my first time. I hate getting short on arrows and finding myself trapped, but so far this is legit. I'll be back for this one another day.

I should have mentioned one glitchy issue I had: while holding down my arrow-button, I can move left and right and I can consistently jump left holding it down...but the game would only rarely let me jump to the right with an arrow ready to go. It made some jumps and enemies pretty annoying!

when it went up on greenlight nobody cared. only after she claimed she was being harassed over it and media ran with that story did it make some traction. no real verification of the facts, just "dev claims harassment!" with a few posts. later a phone call was added, though this was, again, completely unverified.

the main reason some hated her at this point is because of where the posts she complained about came from: wizardchan. a place for literally 30+ year old male virgins who are depressed, with severe anxiety, multiple social problems, and suicidal to the point where every page has a suicide hotline on it. no way anybody from there made a call to her or was about to step outside their bubble - as a former admin put it: "Many Wizardchan users are very depressed and have trouble even ordering pizza over the telephone, much less calling someone they don’t know and making threats."

considering the site in question, no way she'd ever normally go there so people dug how she found out about them. turns out that a different place, the CWCwiki forums, were the ones who made some initial posts against her and those were what got showed off, which she then ran with to her media friends, who proceeded to write about it without any real evidence or thought (even an "it was found where?" would lend doubts and unravel the rest of the story), making Wizardchan and people posting in it to then be trolled, harassed, and insulted, on and off their boards.

so you had a game about depression that, in order to pass Greenlight, actively targeted and hurt a group of people with crippling depression to the point where they're suicidal, and were then promptly painted by certain outlets as scum because of... posts on a forum that either A) aren't consistent with the rest of the place at all, or B) just crude posts.

if anyone hated depression quest prior to launch, that was probably it.
there was also some controversy due to the date being pushed up due to Robin Williams' suicide but it wasn't even out for a week before it got caught up with the stuff with TFYC and the Zoe Post before spiraling out of control.

honestly i blame it more on the journos that decided that they needed to make a story out of it. no reason any of it had to be blown out of proportion the way it was, wizards are just... really easy targets and to make villains out of since "depressed 30 year old virgin male who can't even order a pizza" is almost synonymous with "loser" as opposed to "in need of serious help." if media did their job right, wouldn't have been much of an issue.

and you've never heard of chris-chan? the guy who made a "totally original" character named Sonichu? the guy who got arrested in gamestop for assaulting an employee because Sonic's arms weren't blue?

i mean that's incredibly tame among the stories around him but probably the most famous because he actually got arrested (and it was fairly recent). a ton can be found on know your meme or ED (former's uh... nicer, to him and to your eyes) if you really want to know but long story short: he's been in an infinite loop of trolling with the internet since 2007 and has progressively gotten more and more insane to the point where his arrest was probably more of a brief vacation.

After looking at the site for like, ten minutes, I feel like this is unfairly generalizing in order to somehow paint the place in a victimized light.

It took me no more than 30 seconds to find posts referring to women as "vile" or "weak" succubi. It definitely houses atleast a few people who completely resent women and would likely have no problem doing what is proposed to have been done. Several of them seem depressed, sure, but several of them seem like they'd have no issue getting on a soapbox, too.

some do resent women (i mean, 30+ year old virgins who are depressed are probably gonna resent a lot of things) but they're also utterly incapable of really talking to them or actual confrontation of any kind. you're assuming action in a place that's just talk as if they were capable of either action, they wouldn't be there anymore. you've been on the internet long enough to know that a lot of people like to talk shit but are complete, utter pushovers incapable of doing anything and this is the lowest of that batch you're gonna find. even the name's that sort of thing: they're called "wizards" due to an ongoing Japanese joke until it finally made it into an anime and that became the name. which prompted this:
