Is it ok for cats to eat rubber bands? My cat keeps trying to eat them and I take them away from her. I assume it'd harmlessly pass through her digestive track, but I don't know.

It wouldn't be great but it would likely pass. Hard to say for sure. It would be best that you don't let kitty test it

Oh Hai @lorekai

Is kitty malnourished?

Most cats are overweight

If the cat needs to get more food energy there are a few options. There's high calorie foods made specifically for ill cats that need to keep up their energy or gain weight. Sometimes they're labeled as high energy or critical care.

You can feed kitten food as it's nutritionally more dense

Or you can add extra foods to the diet (like cooked unseasoned chicken or fish) to increase the calories taken in daily

Thanks, but he ended up going to the vet not long after I made that post, poor kitty has diabetes, but he's doing better now he's getting insulin.

One of my parents' cats, named Silky, isn't doing too well right now. He has some kind of growth in his nasal cavity - his breathing is punctuated with snorting and snuffling every so often. According to my folks, they've had him on antibiotics and there was some drainage, but otherwise not much else.

I have a feeling they're gonna be having him put down somewhere in the near future - Silky's getting up there in the years, and treatments are gonna cost an arm and a leg at least.

Apart from his odd breathing noises, he was still the same fluffy purrbox with extra claws that I know and love when I saw him this past weekend.

So the foster cat She-Ra I've had since April, she's something else.

JFoIkAB

When she first came home she was wheezy in a big way. Constant loud labored breathing. She was also so skinny you could feel her spine, her ribs, her hipbones, and it felt like she weighed nothing. She was totally silent meow-wise and rarely purred.

Now she breathes mostly quiet (unless she gets really worked up playing or running around). She's a healthy weight. She learned to YELL for food and attention from the other cat--though her meowing is still really squeaky. And she purrs up a storm cuddling up for bed every night.

XGppWqu

There was some fighting and annoyance from my cat, Tiny, when she came home. Now they're inseparable. He is so fixated on her. Anywhere she goes he wants to follow. He tries licking her and she hits him in the face. He tries to get her to groom him all the time.

Last night Tiny had flopped on the floor and totally stretched, and She-Ra flopped down next to him, touching her paws on his legs. Tiny looked so pleased.

She is a horrible garbage thief, gets into any and all food possible, wants to eat everything I am eating, and turns into a crazy running monster at dusk. Love her.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/06/domesticated-cats-dna-genetics-pets-science/

Overall, cats became a domesticated companion of humans without changing much, says evolutionary geneticist and article coauthor Eva-Maria Geigl. Domestic cats look similar to wildcats, but they aren’t solitary, tolerating both humans and other cats. (See "Our Most Stunning Pictures of Big Cats.")

This is in contrast to dogs, the first animals to be domesticated, Geigl adds. Dogs were selected to perform specific tasks—which never was the case for cats—and this selection for particular traits is what led to dogs’ diversification to the many breeds we see today.

“I think that there was no need to subject cats to such a selection process since it was not necessary to change them,” Geigl says. “They were perfect as they were.”

Which is lucky for them, because they can be such brats. I had to buy a special latch for the sliding doors on my closet because my cat kept getting in and chewing on my shoes like she's a fucking dog. She's lucky that she's really cute.

That's awful, but it was the right thing to do. One of my absolute biggest sources of anger are pet owners who won't fulfill their last responsibility as a pet owner. I had to put one of my cats down a year ago and it hurt like hell, but I took solace in knowing that he was no longer in pain and was getting the rest he deserved.

And damn it, that last sentence was hard to type. Damn cats.

When i put my cat down a few months ago it was completely heartbreaking. It still hurts to think about him feeling so bad and needing to go. no more suffering.

That's what really does it. The cat I had put down went so suddenly, it just made it that much worse. But I could see visibly see how much pain he was in and that helped me know that I did the right thing. I still miss him though.
