A cat topic. How was I not aware of this? Love the big orange lounging fluffball!

These are my two - Chester (foreground) and Cookie (background) - adopted at 8 weeks and now 14 years old. They still wrestle, chase toys, and get the zoomies although they're a bit slow up the stairs sometimes. They also love cuddles, lap and chest larceny, and vocally demanding attention. We usually wake up to at least one of them in bed with us.

Are these 2 cats boys, girls, or is one a boy and the other a girl? Great picture of both your cats! Glad they're still doing well at 14 years old. It still bums me out that my brother's former orange cat, Shosti, died in June 2015 when he was only a few months short of hitting 10 years old b/c of lymphoma. :(

Sorry to hear about Shosti. Lymphoma took my friends' awesome cat - a big gray derp who gave me many cuddles and figured out how to press the play button on the answering machine to hear his favorite people's voices - at around the same age as well. R.I.P. Mr. Thuds.

Cat videos. Need I say more?

I'm a sucker for cat videos, cat photos, anything to do with cats. Cats acting silly, mad, crazy... even if they're just sleeping in a funny position.

It was during a wasted night spent gawking at cat videos that my life nearly ended. I can say with no reservations that I truly wish it had.

I was watching cat clips on YouTube, just whatever new stuff had been posted. Most of it wasn't really that interesting, but you don't find the gems without searching through the crap.

I found "Sad Kitten" through a comment on one of these videos.

"That's funny, but if you want to see something new and different check out Sad Kitten!"

There was a strange link, and I clicked it. An act now famous among bad decisions.

The video showed a small kitten with what looked like a sad face. Down-turned little mouth, hooded eyes that seemed to slant down like it was going to cry. It was a long-haired tabby... very plain and bland-looking, which only added to its depressing little personality.

It sat on a bare wooden floor and just stared at the camera. I would've thought it was a still image except for the random times its eyes would blink.

Then, the narrative started.

It was a cutesy, weak little voice someone had dubbed over the video, like a young woman trying to do an impression of a little boy.

"All my brothers and sisters get taked away 'n I was the only one nobody wanted."

I could actually feel a tear forming in the corner of my eye.

"I'm all alone and none of the olda cats will take care of me."

Another tear.

"I'm hungry but I don't know what ta eat a'cause I never learnded yet."

Tears were speeding down my cheeks now, over my chin, down my neack, I couldn't stop, and I couldn't explain it.

My clothes were drenched, and my hands were soaked as I kept wiping and wiping at my face, trying to hold myself together.

I finally broke eye contact with the sad kitten and rushed to the bathroom.

I looked in the mirror, desperately trying to figure out what was going on and what that strange video had done to me. Tears were everywhere now and I couldn't stop them no matter how hard I tried.

The sink filled with blood.

So many tears. Tears exposing muscle and bone. My eyes and my skin just kept tearing in spreading fractals until my face was a torn mess.

All I could do as I collapsed to the floor was hope and pray that kitten found a home.

At my shelter, it definitely is. We go through periods where we don't have a lot of kittens for a while, then suddenly a lot will show up at the shelter with little warning. I wish it was easier for older cats to be adopted, since too often they get ignored and are always seemingly the last cats adopted out sadly to say.

Two of the cats I didn't think would ever get adopted finally did during January who are older, so there is hope after all! I hope that happens with another older cat, my shelter is trying to promote the adoption of. Which is here: https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/37272917

Yep yep. There are new kittens during specific points of the year. Most notably in the spring a few months after we've had a good warm stretch. I'm anticipating an April kitten season kickoff this year, if not a strange March start.

It continues through the fall. Typically the last litters we see are born in October.

I was going through some old backups and found this picture of my dude Lacerda dwarfing a two-liter pop bottle.

Full disclosure, it was hard to get the bottle and the cat in frame, because every time I'd try to move the bottle closer he'd get curious and ruin the shot. So there's some perspective warping making the bottle look smaller than it is. But make no mistake, this cat was massive - he weighed 27lbs in his prime.

@Zareth Well cats and their shedding differs on each cat. Outside of hairless and rex cats, all cats are going to shed regularly. A quality diet and low-stress household combined with regular grooming and exercise will minimize the shedding. Just get a cat that matches your stuff--like no white cats if you mostly wear black, or watch our for agouti fur

These breeds don't seem too common, but if you don't mind a greater search for a cat shelter or breeder that raises cats of these 2 types, you always could look for a cat that's either a Peterbald or a Sphynx.

Ugh I hate the bad puppy mill-like practices of certain cat and dog breeders, but it is rare to find many cat breeds that don't have at least some hair on them. And I worry you'd probably have to turn to some sort of breeder, which hopefully wasn't too puppy mill like. And the appearance of this breeds, are often a little bit on the ugly side of things. It wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me(I'd probably look for a Sphynx or a Peterbald), but I could see how it could be for some people. Anyway:

Keep in mind hairless cats have much, much, much higher care requirements than normal cats will. You have to actually bathe them several times a week, can't let your dwelling get too cold, may need to dress them, and they're prone to a myriad of chronic health conditions.

I always forget about the chronic health issues of hairless cat breeds, and that they're more prone to not feeling well in cold temperatures vs. cats with short hair or long hair. Now I see why few people ever have any hairless cat breeds in their house, vs. cat breeds with hair!

I think it's nearly time to put down one of my cats. He's not dying exactly... He's a young senior with a healthy appetite.

He is having chronic infections and pain, and can't do most of what he liked doing before. He seems tired and lonely. I love that cat but keep wondering if it's worse to keep him alive and uncomfortable. Frankly if I saw a cat in his chronic condition that wasn't my own I would suggest euthanasia.

Not long ago, one of the senior cats that I worried would never get adopted(she had some sort of health condition which I forget what it was), finally did. Unfortunately, I'm not finding Chatty Catty's profile on petfinder.com at the moment, but maybe I'll find it later and post it accordingly here. I'm hopeful that another one of the senior cats who I enjoy seeing whenever I volunteer at the cat shelter I regularly volunteer at(and now have for 131/2 years, and 14 years as of August!), is adopted out soon(this senior female cat: https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/37272917 ).

I hadn't been able to confirm it, but I think one of my shelter's employees recently adopted a senior cat in another room, that I worried no one would ever adopt( https://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/34521107 ). I'll ask a clinic person next time, about Kokoshka's status if she's still at our shelter or adopted out. Sad to report that Nosferatu was put down on March 30. He went out as comfortable and loved as he could be. There's never going to be another cat like him. Miss you always my friend

^ Nosferatu sure seemed like a great cat! Very sorry to hear he died. My brother's cat(Shosti, named after the Russian classical music composer Shostakovich), passed away a little less than 2 years ago. And I still miss him greatly....

Is it ok for cats to eat rubber bands? My cat keeps trying to eat them and I take them away from her. I assume it'd harmlessly pass through her digestive track, but I don't know.
