Seriously. I mean, making monkey noises? I always knew Europe was about a decade behind us when it comes to culture and technology, but this is like, 1930s-level racism. Get with the program already guys, we've moved on to MUCH more effective techniques!

What do they even call black people in England? African-Enlgishmen? Or are you actually allowed to call them black over there?

From what I've seen, English fans aren't among the primary offenders. I've heard much worse about fans from Spain, Russia, and Italy - countries with comparatively tiny black populations.

And I've never met a black person who was offended by the word "black."

Whenever a soccer player dives, one thousand Americans have their personal freedoms stripped away.

I won't stand for that and SmartiepantsMuffin I know you won't either... but there are LITERALLY Americans out there who would allow (AND RECOMMEND) the US government to put f***ing chips in them so that they could f***ing go to these games and be government-tracked and then post on facebook "lol hay look guys I was at this soccer game my tracker chips proves I was there tee hee!" and their friends would be all "omg soooooooooo jealous!" and the government would be all "yeah... you were there, you were a lot of places... and you said and did a lot of things and we have records of all of it... and you voted yes to some f***ed up bill that gave us this power. Thanks."

btw as much as I love trolling the right, I'm actually not trolling here. This s*** is real government agenda and I'd be with you Libertarian folks if not for the whole religion thing (religion is just as bad when it comes to handing over personal freedoms to a******s as government is, if not worse... and if not worse, it's the same, because religion's a parasite that now eats big government from the inside out and what not. The government and bulls*** like the federal reserve are corrupt c***f***s yes I get it... but they're only part of the problem. They have 2 fingers each, but the thumb is the religious right. If that motherf***er manages to convince the corrupt government and economy that it has the answer, we are done.

Also don't pay too much attention to me. I watched a bunch of documentaries recently and I'm drunk.

(I'm still calling it now...)

you mean the English commentators who routinely rag on Italian soccer called a game where Italy dominated England disappointing? I'm shocked.

They even rag on Italians when the English aren't playing - Keown was complaining that Italians were celebrating their victory too much in a semi-final against a heavily-favoured German side.

Italy had 63% possesion, 31 shots and 18 on target. Compared to England's 37%, 8 and 4 respectively, yes, Italy dominated.

I don't even like football, but even I know the goals are a small part of the game. It's the bits inbetween that people like. If you just care about the result, why watch the game at all? Why not just check the results afterwards?

For baseball, each team selects three batters. The batters are each fed five pitches by their own pitcher. The team that produces the most homers with their 15 pitches wins. This beats the hell out of extra innings.

basically every sport ever has an inferiority complex when it comes to football. Rugby fans are the worst though so given the similarities between rugby and NFL, I wonder if it comes down to good old suppressed homosexuality.

I ****ing love international soccer. I'm a casual sports fan in general, but a big World Cup or Euro match is easily my favorite event in sports, especially now that Fedor retired. The one thing that shames me as a fan and defender or soccer, though, is the flopping. I don't expect them to be tougher than football players, but when they act like they just took a shotgun blast to the gut... that's just embarrassing.

Italy dominated, but largely because England let them. We deliberately played very defensively to absorb them and nick a goal on the counter. Unfortunately our offensive players (Young, Rooney, Gerrard) were all pretty shoddy, meaning the "nick a goal" part never happened.

Defensively outstanding though, as we were in every game (including warm-ups) except maybe Sweden. Italy missed chances because we forced them to, through excellent blocking, tackling and positioning. The Italy/Germany game actually showed what a good job England did on Italy over two hours of play.

I guess you've never seen a fight where one guy dominates the other through the entire match, then right towards the end the other guy gets a lucky submission to win.

England didn't really "let" Italy dominate them, unless you count Rooney's lazy marking of Pirlo a purposeful act of submission. England were forced narrow due to Italy's diamond, England's fullbacks were useless after the start, and their wingers were rarely in position to launch a counter attack (because they were forced inside). Yes, playing deeper naturally means it will be harder to break through the defence deep, but the defence wasn't infallible - two balls hit the woodwork and another goal was called offside. Very little suggests that England let Italy and, more specifically, Pirlo dominate.

The fullbacks were useless because of us being unable to bring them into play - as a result of how weak we were in keeping possession further up the pitch. That last-minute chance, the Rooney overhead kick, was the result of us keeping possession in advanced positions for long enough to work the fullbacks into the game. I'm not saying we played particularly well, because our offensive players should have done more to relieve the pressure, but we very obviously played - and this is true of the tournament as a whole and our warm-up games - with a defensive strategy, based around absorption of pressure and maximizing our few chances (we had the highest chance conversion rate in the tournament) after the group stages.

You're right about Rooney, though. He did a decent job on Pirlo early on, but started to drift. It was dumb.

"two balls hit the woodwork" - iirc both were chanced, long-range shots. Certainly the first one was. Had Marchisio scored the goal of his life in the first couple of minutes, well, it's not like any team can legislate for that.
"another goal was called offside" - because we played an effective offside trap. That is nothing but our defence doing their job. The fact that the goal was ruled out is irrelevant; he scored it illegally because we made him score it illegally.

tl;dr: Our tactics allowed Italy to have the most possession and chances, which seems to be the criteria you/others are using for "domination". That said, we could and should have done more to relieve some of the pressure - our offensive players just spectacularly failed to perform.
