1916 - Woodrow Wilson (New Jersey) 1844 - James K. Polk (Tennessee)
Twice in 56 presidential elections. This election, Mitt Romney will very likely lose his home state of Massachusetts. Based on these historical numbers, losing a home state does a candidate no favors at all, so he's got a tough road ahead.
Seems likely that there's a third variable here that partially explains it (if a state's more likely to go for a particular party in an election, they're also probably more likely to generate more successful candidates from that party). That said, it's still not a good thing for Romney.

"Lesser of two evils" jokes have been the most popular third-angle statement for pretty much every presidential election since I've been alive. Hmm, I wonder if this means they're all kind of bad!
