I doubt it has some of the hall marks of a "real" gundam or mobile suit:
- Beam weaponry
- Compact Nuclear reactor

However, it is possible it has a form of funnels, which are remote controlled pieces that fly around seperate from the main suit and shoot.

You'd be wrong. Electrolasers have been in development since forever and we already have laser batteries operational. Cost is a different story, of course, which is why fusion is a major necessary to make true ultratech weaponry very feasible. But that's not very far away.

The next step is space folding, probably. You're not going to see Gundams used like in the animes. They're likely to be siege machines.
