It's been awhile since I last played this game... is there any reason why (in normal non-Gear battles) why I would not use my best combo every single turn? I don't remember if there is some hidden stat I am losing by doing so, and there seems to be little benefit in doing a non-combo attack.

Well, part of the way to obtain deathblows involves using other combinations over and over, so in random battles mess around. Always end on 'X' though, since they all end on 'X' when you get them.
THAT SAID, if you wanna get deeper into that s*** and learn deathblows at an alarming rate (still gotta hit the appropriate level, though, of course) then check out my buddy fidormula's guide at the FAQ section here. Ending attacks with other buttons is technically a good thing sometimes if you know what you're doing and you'll learn deathblows so f***ing quickly.

From: Mershaaay | #003 what an illogical system Yes, it is not generally a good idea to play Xenogears for either of its battle systems.
However, it is kind of cool that there are kinda-sorta two of them! Also, remember that your Gear Deathblows tie in directly to your Deathblows. So yeah, good to have in general.
