i remember you spend a lot of time giving your character their stats

you can have warriors, mages, archers, and the like

3 different classes i think each having its advantages and disadvantages

you can make certain characters proficient in certain things (like lockpicking or assassination, etc)

its fun but i get lost in games like this as they are very open ended and i never know where to go -_-

And various traits at character creation that give you xp bonuses or penalties. Same thing with races, which generally just get bonuses to specific skills/weapons, including skills that normally need prereqs (eg cat dudes with bows getting sharpshooter, damage booster, lizard dudes with polearms getting weaponmaster)

I don't think there's actually classes, you just get x amount of skill points per level that you spread among everything, with cleric spells and wizard spells having their own specific one. Though some of the traits give you bonuses every few level ups to the casting skills, so that might've been what you were thinking of.

Pretty easy to gimp your characters if you don't know what you're doing IIRC. Finite xp too, though that keeps it interesting imo cause you can't just grind your way through.

uh, so I may need to start over if I screw up the level ups and the game becomes too tough? Is the game very long?

I remember Exile and Exile II being fun, but terribly difficult, shareware and I've always heard Avernum improves them quite a bit, especially in graphics.

Well, apparently some of the Avernum (not sure which ones) are just Exile games with better presentation and slightly different gameplay.
