do people not realize it has a fully fledged single player story?

I mean yeah you have to be online to play it after the first few hours, but it's there

Yeah, no, I prefer my DQ to have stuff like actual characters with personalities.

yep probably like DQIX's which was pretty good. Yeah your main character's didn't do much, but the NPCs were all fantastic

As for DQ having "characters with personalities", they're kind of useless in most DQs. Usually the games focus on the NPCs you meet, which are lively enough IMHO

I know. I was just a huge fan of DQ VIII, and thought they were moving the series in that direction. I guess it was just an anomaly. I can always hope for DQ XI.

Honestly, I don't think its fair to write off DQX just because it's an MMO. All of the reports from the beta testers (of which my friend is one of them) have been pretty positive. The general consensus is that it's basically a better version of DQIX. Better story, better environments, a lot more robust and full of content.

And in any case, an MMO is something Horii has been wanting to do with the series since around 1999-2000, so it's interesting to see how that's actually panning out

This is honestly the first time I've had no interest in a DQ game.

And calling it a "Better DQIX" doesn't help, since IX was a pretty weak game.

Being the the beta test is being held in Japan, all of the reports are in Japanese. I could link you to some 2ch threads, but I don't think that would help.
