Just got back from a midnight showing and I'm sad to say its not the perfect sci-fi movie. Not even a great one. Just good, with a healthy dose of "ugh" and "seriously?" And "oh come on."

The Dark Knight did. Of course as a result The Dark Knight Rises can't possibly because it has way more hype than either of the first two Nolanverse films.

The only reason people even watched it is because of the most annoying sound effect of all time in all the trailers. It's like watch it or we'll rip your brain out.

What sound effect in the theater are you guys talking about? Not the first time I've heard that complaint, and I'd like to know exactly wtf it is without having to watch.
The Inception booms that practically everything uses in trailers nowadays.
Also, yeah, movies can live up to the hype, and even surpass it. Cabin in the Woods and The Avengers are two great examples.
Aliens has always been a bit too one-dimensional with its characters for my liking. I like its atmosphere, and it has fairly worthy development. Plus, seeing Paul Reiser as a smarmy d*** is always good for a chuckle. But I'm a huge sci-fi fan and it isn't really up there with the greats for me like it is for a lot of folks.
Of course, that has everything to do with my relative boredom towards horror/suspense riffs. Strangely enough, though, the claustrophobic thrills of Alien actually stand toe-to-toe with the more action-oriented Aliens for me. /shrug
As for Prometheus, I had some hope it would be a bit more cerebral, but as the early reviews pointed out the ups and downs with an alarming trend toward the dismissal of the characters and plot, I sighed and decided not to go to the midnight showing.
Aliens may not have had a lot of character depth outside of Ripley, but the characters were all fun and well done for an action film, especially Hudson and Burke. Compared to, say, Alien 3 or Resurrection, Aliens characters were significantly more memorable.
Yeah, true. Well, I mean, I didn't like Alien 3 or Resurrection at all, anyway, so definitely no argument there. I really hated how Alien 3 opened with killing everyone but Ripley from Aliens. It's like, "f*** you, hard-earned survivors!"
I can't say I was really looking forward to another movie full of Newt, but yeah, that was such a **** you type opening that just like obliterates the importance of the previous film. God damn that series went downhill so fast.
Yeah, that seems to be the general consensus. I was thinking about seeing it in theaters, but... eh, I'll pass. Way too many other movies I need to see this summer.

I thought it was okay, not bad. Ridley is definitely a master of suspense, I have zero complaints about the first half of the movie. Just where it ended up going I didn't find that interesting.
Fassbender definitely stole the show, man those curious robots and their lack of morals, always scary to hang out with.

This topic title confused me a bit when I first read it as well.
'did not live up to the hype' implies that there was a lot of hype which I simply do not feel there was. I wasn't expecting an over the top amazing movie and so I was pleased with how it went. My big gripe was how unlikeable almost everyone was.
Considering it was directed by one of the people who directed one of the two good Alien movies, yes people had some hopes.

From his looks Magus is Macho Man Randy Savage as an anime zombie. The black wind howls, and one of you will snap into a Slim Jim ooh yeeeah! -sonicblastpunch
Yikes, this movie has gotten some absolutely VENOMOUS reactions from a lot of folks I've heard from. I thought it was pretty darn good! Certainly not "all time greats" area, but it was (probably) better than Alien and not that far behind Aliens. The biggest problem it had was that I couldn't be buggered to care about any of the characters besides David, who I'm not entirely certain I was meant to care for. >_>
but it was (probably) better than Alien and not that far behind Aliens.
See, I can't agree with this at all. However, David was the only good character. Shaw was pretty tolerable, and Vickers was amazing up until the end when she totally ruined everything that she had going for her.

Just saw it, came out of the theater pretty confused as to whether I thought it was okay or good. After thinking about it for a while, I think it may actually be great. I couldn't quite grasp the whole scope of the story as I was watching it but upon reflecting on the movie this is what I got.
The humanoid aliens create a biological weapon like the captain of Prometheus claims. This biological weapon has the capacity to either create or destroy life as Fassbender's character hints towards. The central question of the movie is, 'why did these humanoids create human life and then seek to destroy it?' What I gather is the humanoid in the beginning of the movie steals a biological weapon and sets off to Earth. He consumes it which causes his DNA to break into smaller pieces providing the template for life. Life on Earth arises. Fast forward however many years and you have the crew of the Prometheus coming into contact with the humanoid species responsible for their existance-- however, unbeknownst to them this species as a whole never wanted their existence and as such the last survivor of the Xenomorph attack (under analyzing the gravity of their biological weapons) sets out to destroy the humans.
I dunno, that just seems like a really really cool story. It's kinda like when I saw The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I didn't particularly care for it as I watched it, but when I thought about the story I really enjoyed it. Prometheus is kinda like that, but it's made in such a way that people can draw their own interpretations which is something I greatly appreciate.
