I think it's common because people always need cardboard boxes for some project, and why pay when you can ask a store and (possibly) get em free. Even if they say no, they won't treat it as a weird request.

Yeah, if you got to a department store in the morning after they get their shipments in (monday or tuesday) just ask the manager or someone stocking the shelves. They're happy to get rid of them and I usually do this when I'm moving.

I dunno. Just go to a grocery store or something and just ask them if they mind giving you some.

You may have better luck at a Home Depot or something than a small store. It's probably one of the most common requests they get.

I work at a convenience store, and people ask for our boxes all the time. It's common practice for when people are moving.
