Why is Chelsea getting to play Bayern Munich to be crowned champion of Europe when they didn't actually win their own league?

There are about 20 leagues in Europe (probably more) so having all the winners play each other at the end of each season would be pretty unrealistic (in fact, two weeks after this match, the European Championships, an international tournament played between countries, will begin, and will run for around a month). Instead, qualification for the Champions League (fancy name for "European Cup") is based on league performance in the preceeding year, and the competition takes place throughout the next season. The best leagues, as decided by club performance over the previous five years, get to have multiple teams entered (England, Spain and Germany, currently the best three leagues, get 4 teams in, while my country's league, Scotland, gets two teams into the qualifying rounds).

Ahhh so its the previous year. So do these teams still compete in their respective leagues or did Chelsea only play in the Champions for example

Champions League isn't really a league, it's a knockout tournament with a mini-league as the first round.
But yeah if Chelsea don't win this game they won't be in the CL next season. They came sixth, so.
This was the second European Cup, where champions of each competition played. Athletic Bilbao was champion of Spain so they got to play, but Real Madrid also got to play as they won the European Cup the year before.
A lot of people of the smaller countries (Denmark, Belgium, Serbia, Scotland, Netherlands etc.) are kind of upset with the new system as their clubs now almost always have to play preliminaries to get in the CL even though they are champions, while clubs like Chelsea or Tottenham can end fourth and still get to play.
The only reason they're crap is because all of the CL millions stay with those countries, so the strong stay strong and the weak stay weak. Ajax won plenty of CL titles before, but where are they now?
