I want to upgrade from my s***ty 7-8 year old desktop. I want to get a laptop for the option of portability, but I greatly prefer sitting down at a desktop setup than working on a laptop. So I could just have my laptop off to the side or underneath (like in the pullout drawer of my desk that's typically for a keyboard), preferably with the lid closed, and have a regular mouse and keyboard and my widescreen monitor up on top of my desk that I would be working off of. Basically, I would be using it as a desktop, but if I want, I can easily unplug everything and take it with me if I'm going somewhere for an extended period; or if changes in my life would lead me to prefer to using a laptop normally, then I would have it instead of being tied down with a desktop.

So I'm curious how this would work, if at all. I'd like to have a $300-$400 price range. Since I would have a keyboard and mouse plugged in at all times, I'd want at least four USB slots. I was just checking on Best Buy just to get a rough idea, and everything had just two or three slots. I suppose I could deal with three at an inconvenient minimum, although I suppose I could just get a cheap USB hub and be fine with that. I don't need any special specs for gaming or anything, just typical use.

I'm wondering if I would run into any problems with this though. Typically I leave my desktop running 24/7. Would I have problems with overheating? Is this whole thing just not a good idea for some reason? Does anyone else here do this?

I haven't turned my laptop off in months. Can't really offer any other advice since I probably need a new one too.

My laptop has been running almost constantly for 4 years and it's still going strong, it has overheating problems but it's because it's a gaming laptop (when I bought it anyway), and a Toshiba, Toshiba laptop usually overheat easily or so I've heard. But then again it only becomes hot when I game so if you don't pretty much anything will work alright without any overheating problems.

If you want to be 100% sure put something under it so air can pass below.

All the advice I can give.

For laptops, sleep mode is a godsend. I use that instead of turning it off wherever possible.

Your price range is tight. Look for laptops with an a6-3400 inside, it's prob the best you'll find in that range. Especially if you keep looking through the month because its successor just came out. Maybe if you're lucky you can find an a8-3500 too, but I doubt it.

my brother bought an HP

said it had sound problems and hard drive problems

sent it back to get fixed, they replaced the hard drive

still had sound problems

i ran a chkdsk on it at one point and it ended up killing the OS

sent it back to get fixed, they replaced the hard drive

still had sound problems

after an angry facebook post, they decided to just give him a new laptop

will probably have sound problems

meanwhile i've got an HP that lasted for 6 years, no problem.
and know of a sizable amount of people with the more recent HPs fielding APUs that have no problems. not many use 'em, but in terms of build quality it's awesome. durable, long lasting, powerful, easy and fun to overclock.

This is a little out of your desired range, but outside of hp laptops, which are fine if it's for a newer chip as they have been great at it, or refurbished laptops, which are a bit of a gamble but often last good times if it's from a good manufacturer, here's one from Amazon.

Phone posting so yeah. Definitely stick with either an a6 or if possible an a8. That way you'll be good for everything and if you find something you would like to play it'll be an option. Other than that though they run cool, ovetclock easy, undervolt well with said overclock, and last for a good 6 hours.
