what are some good things to put on it?

(Last topic purged and it just arrived today. It's charging right now so I will be putting stuff on it tonight.)

I am going to put some sort of comic reader on there first. Not sure if I can just put CDisplay or if I have to get some special one. All I want is one that lets me use pretty much any cbr/cbz file. I know someone suggested something and I think it was BlackMageJawa but I totally forgot the name of it.

I really, really want to put this on it:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.co.sega.shining_force_chronicle1.monthly.sum

I don't care if the text is in Japanese, it won't affect me at all. I just need that game so I will probably need help with that process (foolmo is aiding me with this).

Not sure what programs there are to manage music but I don't plan on using it for music that much anyway. I'm sure I'll want something though.

And I have amazon prime so that's how I plan to watch most of my movies/tv.

Anything else that's good, feel free to suggest it.

You should probably put some comics on it.

(I have no idea what the OS is. Android?)

Yeah, Android.

The ONE thing I don't need help with is obtaining comics/music.

Everything else, I'm definitely gonna need help since I've never used Android (never had a smartphone or anything, just used a Windows laptop/tablet for all my portable needs).

Try that. The Windows program is a great comic reader with an active developer. Worth trying, at least!

Ok, I tried the free version and it looks like EXACTLY what I want.

Perfect. Except the first file of the first folder I added doesn't show up.

I added 3 folders with 23 files and they all showed up except that one. And it was a cbr file (like many of the ones that DID show up).

The only thing I can think of is that I opened that file with Perfect Viewer first (it's the only one I opened with that) and so it somehow messed up the filetype association or something.

Any other thoughts as to why it might happen?

Also, is the free version good enough of does it impose some kind of limit/restriction?

I am willing to pay for it if I need to but as of now I don't see the point.

Netflix, Crunchyroll, etc

Basically any app to watch videos and stuff with because the screen on that tablet is gorgeous.

I dunno if you will get the same deal but when I bought the Transformer Prime for my mom, she got a bunch of free Angry Birds games.

I only tried Perfect Viewer for like 5 minutes but it seemed to suck pretty hard.

And ComicRack was ballin' from the start.

I'll probably mess around with them all for a bit longer.

i don't have a transformer prime, but i DO have a touchpad running roughly the same OS. >_>

first i'll say amazon should become your friend because their free apps can be very useful at times. free pdf, document editing, games, splashtop (lets me stream my desktop to it), and random little things. the free apps they do are always nice to see.

first i'll say give other keyboards a try, Swiftkey Tablet X has a free version worth giving a shot. the only difference with free versions and paid versions tends to be ads, but... as you may expect, there are apps designed to specifically remove ads. can be useful for stuff like Meridian (great music player) and MX Video (best video player), which both have free versions and are very, very good.

use Chrome. the browser is amazing, and if you use it on your desktop you can sync your gmail account to allow your tablet to access the same sites exactly where you left off. it's awesome.

<,< emulators and the like are a given if you want to do some gaming on it. most aren't in the app store (the best ones definitely aren't) so you'll have to do some searching or ask people familiar.

there's a billion apps and a lot of sites have 'em. living social, google offers, ebay, starbucks, whatever bank you have, etc all should be there. facebook's sucks so don't even bother with it. how it's being used will matter for what you put on the machine.

if you want to maximize what your tablet can do, you're gonna want to overclock it a bit. but for now will stay away from this topic as it's better to get a feel for how it is now, that way when you later feel 'man i wish this were faster' you'll not only have the option, but you'll have better options than what we got right now.

Ok, I added a lot more comics to the free ComicRack app and now lots of them show up missing. And one folder says "Solid CBR eComics are not supported. Read the FAQ for details."

And those comics are in the same format as others.

Will the paid version have these same problems?

Depends on what you're looking for. I guess it's all about preferences of layout and settings, but its got plenty of options, and is well a perfect viewer ha if I say so myself.

I also tried other ones such as ComicRack, ha and well my advice to fix your issues with it, well, would be to use another app.

Word. I recommend giving that one some more, another one that's functional is A Comic Viewer. Pretty much, I just wanna click on comics, scroll, read, there's tons of decent options luckily.

whoo. honestly i'd say try both out, see which you like more. chrome is generally faster, and if you use it on your computer it gets a really nice benefit if you're ever away from it and want to see your tabs, bookmarks, or passwords. >_>;

yeah, they synced everything basically.

One thing I have noticed (and I feel like it's a defect) is that my screen doesn't rotate.

Like if I am holding it long ways and then I rotate the tablet in my hands so that it's taller than it is long, the screen stays the same.

Didn't really notice it at first because I was reading comics (all tall, never wide) and watching movies (opposite).

But when I go to webpage and I want to rotate it so that I can scroll the long way, I simply can't (not even manually).

And there is a Display setting that says "Auto-rotate screen" and I have it checked. No difference if I uncheck it.

Tilt-rotation is disabled when the keyboard's attached. Apps can force it to portrait, but any that don't will stay landscape unless you undock.

Huh.

Might be a silly question, but you're tilting it relative to the ground, right? If you're holding it level then spinning it won't change anything, you have to have the thin end pointing down.

What are the requirements for Chrome? It says it's incompatible with my phone and my tablet... I guess that's why I went with Dolphin.

Oh android 4.0 damn you ice cream sandwich!
Which reminds me, I wonder how CM9 is doing for the HP Touchpad...

Requirements are having Android 4.0 or higher. Aka, devices running ice cream sandwich devices can use chrome. Cyanogymod 9 is ics, so I can do it on my touchpad and technically could on my phone too if I wanted to. I'm cool with dolphin for my phone, but I like having my desktops stuff available on the tablet.

neither, i'm using CherryKang.

CM9 basically got advanced enough that it might as well have been a beta on it, and through another group's tweaks on CM9 (Kang) some custom roms were made for it. net result i can overclock this thing to 1.7 and it being totally stable. it's pretty ridiculous how that developers community matched every expectation and then some. now we're waiting on HP to continue giving out the full code on WebOS (they've been doing gradual releases for the past year and finish this summer) and then it'll be really, really fun again. fully expect to see complete intergration between the two OS.
